Almost all my stories are inspired by a visual—a photo, a dream, a person I pass on the street. “Harlan Adam’s Neck” is no exception. Online, I came across a post of a photo of a 1950s movie star and was struck by his beautiful neck, something I hadn’t noticed in his movies. The photo was shot from below, which emphasized the neck. Usually, the focus is on his handsome face. A story began to tell itself to me. I wrote it down as fast as I could, shared it with beta readers, and revised, revised, revised.
