‘The situation in which the division found itself during that night was anything but pleasant. Troops did not understand the necessity for those orders, which resulted in numerous counter questions. The roads were overcrowded with traffic and in many places choked as the troops to the rear turned around. Supply vehicles were unable to locate their units in the dark and remained stuck in the traffic. In some cases, on the uncleared northern flank, contact with the enemy forces had resulted. But still, regardless of all the difficulties, the division was back on the move again early in the morning. Units were reorganised and were mostly supplied. Serious distrubances by enemy forces, which would have been disastrous, did not take place.’

Von Waldenburg condemned the decision as ‘fatal’ and it does seem more than likely that had the 116. Panzer-Division pressed on, they might otherwise have reached the Meuse. It had already reached the Marche – Bastogne road a whole day before the 2. Panzer-Division, which was later brought to a standstill just eight kilometres short of the river.
