nearly as many batters as he struck out. Koufax used his 1972 Hall of Fame speech to thank those who had “a lot more faith than I did to be honest” during what began as a “very inglorious career.”248

“And I had times I would be possibly tempted to go look for a job somewhere for those first six years,” Koufax told the Cooperstown crowd.249

Koufax’s fortunes began to change after the team moved out to Los Angeles, thanks in part to a 1960 Spring Training conversation in the skies over Florida with backup catcher Norm Sherry. The Dodgers were flying from Vero Beach to Orlando for an exhibition match against the Washington Senators when Sherry offered him a bit of advice, according to UPI. “Why don’t you take something off your fastball and see what happens?” Sherry suggested. “You throw so hard, few guys can hit you anyway.”250
