Teema
âMama, can you watch Kenya for a couple hours tonight? Kane and I want to catch a movie.â
I walked up on my mama, who was laying on the couch laughing at an episode on Family Feud. As soon as I came into the living room and got the last word of my question out of my mouth, her fit of laughter turned into a fit of coughs. I ran to the kitchen to pour her a glass of water. She grabbed it from my hands and swallowed it all down before lying back on the couch, holding her chest and wheezing.
âIf you need me to watch her, baby, you know I can. I justââ
Before she could even finish her sentence, she was up again with her hand pressed over her mouth and taking off down the hall to the bathroom. She slammed the door behind her and then the most disgusting retching followed. Yuck!
âWhat you got that stank ass look on your face for?â Kane asked as he walked down the stairs holding Kenya in his arms. I swear that little girl barely had to use her own feet when he was around.
âI asked Mama if she could watch Kenya for us but sheâs too sick. I canât leave Kenya with her like this.â I gestured towards the bathroom where the sound was still coming from. Kane seemed pretty much unbothered and just gave me a blank stare.
âYou sure? I was down here about thirty minutes ago and she looked healthy as a muthafucka while she was watching TV and shit.â
I rolled my eyes, noting from his tone that he still wasnât over the fact that he wanted my mamaâs ass out of the house. Iâd told him about her having cancer and he was damn near emotionless about it. I wasnât stupid and I knew my man. Kane didnât believe that my mama was sick and he didnât want her to be under our roof any longer, it was obvious. I couldnât explain to him how I was feeling because I knew he wouldnât get it. He never had issues with his parents and they never needed his help with anything. The way I was brought up was so different from the way he was brought up. My mama always needed me. Growing up, it was only the two of us. I knew that she had made some mistakes, but in the end, I was all she had, and I knew I had to be there for her whenever she needed me.
âI donât expect you to understand, Kane. And itâs okay because itâs really not your business. Sheâs my mama which means sheâs family, whether you like it or not.â
He gave me a look like he wanted to fight me on the subject, but then just threw up one of his hands as he cradled Kenya in his arms with the other. I looked down at her. She was an exact replica of her father, something that I absolutely hated when Kane and I werenât together.
