Chapter Seventeen

Ishmael

I Can’t Go Back

The next morning, I walk into the kitchen and find Grandma at the table sipping hot tea. The weight of the previous evening is heavy on my shoulders. Knowing Grandma, it won't take her long to figure out something is wrong.

To avoid her suspicions, I walk around to her side of the table and plant a kiss on her cheek, then do my best to sound normal when I greet her with, "Good morning, Grandma."

"Good morning, Son." She studies me closely. "Where you headed so early this morning? Got some work to do? You haven't told me much about your construction business?"

I shrug. "No, I don't have to work today. I have something else I need to handle."

She pins me with a knowing glare. "That can only mean you're going back to Miracle's house. You two have spent quite a bit together, and I like it. I see a bright future for you and her, Son."

Everything was going lovely until Prinshae showed up and dropped her pregnancy bomb. Now, I must deal with my past before considering a future with Miracle.

I let out a long, troubled breath. "I wish I was headed over to Miracle's, but I have something else to do before I visit her today."

Grandma’s eyes brighten. "That only leaves one thing. You're going shopping for my surprise party. I knew it!"

My mouth falls open, and I stare at her, dumbfounded. "Party? Wh-what party?"

"Go ahead and admit it." She sips from her coffee cup. "If you were planning to throw an old lady a surprise party, you would leave the house early in the morning to get supplies. I'm just saying." She wiggles her brow as she sets the coffee mug down and shrugs. "Not many people I know make it to seventy-nine. Seems like a great reason to celebrate, don't you think?" She winks at me almost in a way to say I'd better be planning a party for her birthday.

Laughing, I walk around and kiss her on the cheek. "You’re right, Grandma. It’s a great reason to celebrate, and we will definitely celebrate you. But no matter how much I wish I was, I’m not going shopping for your birthday. I’m about to run out to Smyrna to talk to Prinshae about some other business.”

Grandma frowns. “Prinshae, that’s that old girlfriend you never brought over here to meet me, right?”

“Yeah. That’s her.”

“I never understood why you were with her for a whole year and never thought to bring her over here once.”

At that moment, I realize I would have brought Prinshae to meet my grandmother if I felt strongly enough for her. “I guess what we had wasn’t as serious as I thought,” I admit.

It definitely isn't as serious as the news Miracle laid on me the other night. Knowing my father and his wife are close to Miracle is major news. None of it is nearly as devastating as finding out that I might soon be a father to my own child with Prinshae.
