Chapter Eleven

Although EmmaKay had turned off all of the lights except a couple of lamps in the bakery, he could still see her, standing near one of the tables and texting on her phone, the illuminated display highlighting the tumble of golden spirals surrounding her face and making her look angelic.

Ben swallowed and paused a moment to merely enjoy the view. He hadn’t wanted to miss her, hadn’t wanted to be drawn to someone when he knew they shouldn’t be together. But seeing her now and sensing his eagerness to be near her again, he realized how much he had missed EmmaKay over the past few days.

And, if he were being honest, over the past ten years.

But his reasons for staying away were still valid. She had a life centered around faith and a family that stayed together for the long haul. Ben had neither, and he didn’t foresee that changing.

Still typing on her phone, she hadn’t seen him, and Ben considered that a good thing. Because he didn’t have any right to be here, pushing himself into her God-centered world. So, with another glance at the pretty lady on the other side of the window, he decided to stick to his original plan of staying away, turned and started across the square.

He made it to the grassy section that surrounded the three-tiered fountain before he heard the bells on the bakery door in the distance.

“Ben?” she called.

He stopped, glanced behind him and saw EmmaKay, standing in the doorway still holding her phone. But now he noticed her furrowed brow and saw the worry on her face. What if his fear from this afternoon had been accurate, and that woman he saw leaving the bakery had delivered bad news about Averly? He had to know.

Forgetting he’d decided to stay away, he moved toward her and asked, “Is everything okay with Averly? My mother told me the social worker was coming by tonight.”

Her head moved in a jerky nod. “Yes, everything’s fine with her, and the visit with Candace went well, but,” she glanced at her phone again, “I’ve been trying to reach Mandy or Jessica, but I haven’t heard back from either of them. And I need...” She frowned, hesitated.

“What do you need?”

“I just can’t get it all together,” she said. “I should’ve asked Candace if she could stay here so I could run to the store, but I was so nervous about the home visit going well that I didn’t think about it until she left.” She released a heavy sigh. “I forgot to buy diapers for Averly today, and I put the last one on her before she went to bed. I was going to see if Jess or Mandy would come and stay with her so I could run to the store.”

“I can stay with her,” he said, stepping closer, close enough that he could smell the sweet scent that always seemed to surround EmmaKay. Something similar to the sugary aroma he associated with the bakery, but a little different.
