Lieutenant Kelly’s Office

4:20 p.m.

Marcus Kelly dialed the number on his cellphone for the third time in an hour. He still got no answer, and for the third time, he left a message.

“Please call me when you get this. It’s very important.”

He hung up just as his office phone rang. “Lieutenant Kelly.”

“Marcus, this is Walsh.”

“Hey, Cap. To what do I owe the pleasure?”

“I understand you have another body on your hands from the JFK Library area, is that right?”

“I’m afraid so. Murphy and Sullivan were at the autopsy this afternoon.”

“Are they connected?”

“According to Megan Quinn, they are.”

There were several moments of silence, then it sounded to Kelly like his boss had come to a decision. “Let’s do this. Call Grace Sheehan over at the BAU, tell her the situation, and see if she thinks she can help us.”

Kelly had already considered bringing in an agent from the FBI field office. Grace Sheehan was Chief of the Behavior Analysis Unit at the Boston field office, and not someone Kelly was personally acquainted with. “What about McDonald?”

“He’s good, but Grace owes me one. Tell her I asked specifically for her to look at the case.”

“Okay. I’ll take care of it today.”

“Good. I gotta run.”

The line went dead, but Kelly held on to the receiver while he spun his Rolodex. He could put all the information on his computer, but he knew where everything was on this antiquated card file, and stubbornly refused to give it up. Quickly finding the number, he punched it in.

“FBI, Boston office.”

“Yes, Agent Sheehan, please.”

“One moment.”

There were several clicks as the call moved through various trackers and recorders. “Behavioral Analysis.”

“Agent Sheehan, please.”

“This is Sheehan.”

“Agent Sheehan, this is Lieutenant Marcus Kelly from BPD precinct C-6.”

“Afternoon, Lieutenant. How can I help you?”

“We have a case over here that might benefit from your unit’s expertise. Captain Walsh suggested I give you a call.”

“Walsh is good people. What’s the basics?”

“Two female bodies, close proximity dump sites, same injuries, same basic physical description.”

“Interesting. I can come by tomorrow morning. Will the detectives handling the case be there?”

“Give me a time and I’ll make sure they are.”

“Okay, how about nine?”

“Perfect. See you then, and thanks.”

He hung up the phone and punched in another number.

“This is Murphy.”

“Murph, it’s Kelly.”

“Yeah, boss?”

“Need you here by nine tomorrow morning. BAU is sending an analyst over.”

“Oh... okay. Can do.”

“Alert Sullivan for me, will ya?”

“Yes, sir.”

Kelly hung up again. Taking out his cellphone, he hit redial. Within seconds, he was leaving his fourth message of the afternoon.
