Part 4

Creativity

As Dr Tony Attwood has stated, “With Asperger’s, life is a stage. The curtain goes up while they are in public and down when they are at home.”[1]

In this section, five contributors discuss how they use all types of artforms as vehicles to express themselves. Once they found an area within the arts that they could grasp, they focused on this area and used these creative methods to communicate.

And it is stated that persons with ASD have difficulty in communicating… Maybe we are just not listening?

• Robert McLachlan writes about how the skills he learnt through his life on stage with dance and musical theatre helped him develop his “character” and how he sometimes uses role-play with real social situations.

• Donna Williams claims that her autism built her relationship to musicality and this ultimately allowed her to find a bridge between her world and the external world.

• Jeanette Purkis illustrates her journey of self-discovery through her artwork, initially struggling to capture the essence of a person’s facial features to becoming a successful artist specialising in Asperger reality.

• Peter Myers explains how his search for the definition of the “Outsider Artist” not only rang bells with his artwork, but as a person with Asperger.

• Colin Webber composes this contribution with the same passion that he composes his music with. He talks about the emotional journey through music and how he is an aural sculptor rather than a musician.
