But the asylum refused to take him, and he was brought back to the city to resume his interminable peregrinations.
In July 1882, Officer Oberwetter took Damos in charge and placed him in the city jail. The old man had gotten his clothes torn and was in a horrible plight. The county judge was requested to supply relief but stated that he was unable to do anything. But something had to be done. His condition was a standing disgrace, and the dictates of common humanity, if nothing else, suggested some action on his behalf.
Damos was turned over to the county authorities on a charge of lunacy. He was thoroughly washed and cleaned, furnished with a new suit of clothes and confined in jail. After being supplied with the new suit of clothing, he was turned out of jail the next morning. Damos was drunk as a lord before nightfall.
Just weeks later, after his permanent commitment to the asylum in 1886, the people of Austin were already missing him on the streets and wondering how he was doing.
After a month at the asylum, he was pronounced as getting along well, but he did miss his bundle of papers and his usual drinks of stale beer.
He died in the asylum on March 5, 1887, and the Statesmanâs obituary read, in part, âThe harmless old man, with the batch of newspapers on his bosomâa part of his hallucinationâwas, for long years, a familiar sight for the people of Austin.â He was buried on the asylum grounds, and to this day, Austin State Hospital authorities refuse to release any information about him and the location of his grave unless the request comes from a family member.
