CHAPTER 14

Two for the Show

When I got back into the office with Becky, Angie, and the boys, the magnitude of what we were involved in and the enormous emotions of the day began to surface. I couldn’t stop smiling, but I felt queasy and terrified that something would still go wrong, something that we hadn’t planned on or couldn’t foresee.

After talking with Becky about some basics in childcare, we immediately asked her to take us through the timing and schedule of all of the court dates and legal documents. In hindsight, although I am sure this is common, the timing might have looked insensitive and cold, but we just couldn’t help ourselves. Our trust factor was low, and our hearts were not fully recovered yet, even with the boys in our immediate possession.

After being reassured several times, we finally called both families to report the news. We started with my brother Warren and his wife Lea so they could serve as the communications headquarters. It was nice to shock everyone with good news, for a change. As our family members expressed their joy and relief, my joy was building. The more relatives I talked with, the more confident I felt. Soon I was in one of my manic highs. We were now the parents of two beautiful baby boys! I was finally a dad! Angie was finally a mom! We were finally parents!

We hugged every employee in the building and then headed for the car and the start of our future. The future had finally come! The future was finally here!

After figuring out how to strap the baby chairs in our car’s second-row bucket seats (a process that has brought many a man to tears or cursing—do they think women are the only ones who have to put their hands through the 2” plastic seatbelt tunnel in the back of those things?!?), we put the boys in place for safe travel and set off down the road to our dreams.

Immediately, I began to drive like the people I’ve always criticized. You know the ones I am talking about. The guys that go ten miles below the speed limit, put their turn signals on a mile before they’re going to turn, and tap their brakes fifty feet away from an approaching green light, just in case it should turn yellow, let alone red. I kept looking in the rearview mirror to make sure the boys were still OK, beginning a whole new era in my life, an era of caution, protection, and concern. Had I turned into a real dad that quickly? Had I just aged ten years?

When we pulled into our driveway around 8:30 PM, my brother and his family were waiting with honks, cheers, hugs, and celebration. We called the remaining of our closest friends, who passed the word around to the rest of Elgin, Ohio, and Iowa for us. Where was WGN—the Chicago Super Station? Didn’t they know we were home?
