STRETCH AND SQUASH
DISTORTION (KNOWN AS STRETCH AND SQUASH) MAKES ANIMATION MORE ENGAGING. HOWEVER, SHAPES CAN ONLY BE DISTORTED AS LONG AS THEY MAINTAIN VOLUME.
BASIC
Animation without distortion tends to look stiff. Action seems less exciting; emotions seem duller and less engaging. Does this apply even to realistic characters? Here you might think that animating without distortion would create more convincing action. Take a look at some live action footage, however, such as a boxer taking a punch, and you will discover that in real movement a surprising amount of distortion actually takes place.
When we animate, even realistically, we often choose to exaggerate the amount of distortion in the movement to make it read more clearly. But whether we distort a little or a lot, the volume or mass of the elements being animated must never change in order for the movement to be believable. To get a picture of this, think of what happens when you stretch a balloon or press down on it: when the ends bulge out, the middle gets thinner; when the ends are pushed in, the middle gets fatter, and so on.
