Chapter Eighteen

Brianna

“Brianna,” the warden said, giving me a smile that made my skin crawl as he gestured for me to enter his office. If I’d expected something grim because we were in a prison, I should have known better. We’d climbed a never-ending set of winding stairs to reach his office, which sat perched in what could only be described as a luxury guard tower. It loomed over the prison, and all four walls were made of glass, so he could spy on the prisoners below any time he pleased. As if he couldn’t monitor us on cameras, he had to sit over us like a king in a throne room. I hated the bastard on sight.

“Warden,” I said with a curt nod.

“Have a seat,” he said, gesturing to the gilded chair opposite his expansive glass desk.

Knowing I should pick my battles, I sat. As he circled his desk, I ran my fingers along the gold edges of my chair. I wondered how much this would get on the black market. How many days a Nephilim in Halftown could eat, or how much medicine Gemma could get, for the sale of a chair that the warden let prisoners sit in—when they had the privilege of visiting him.

The warden sat opposite me, tenting his hands on the desk in front of him and staring at me with his sharp, blue eyes. I studied him back, slouching in the chair and refusing to quake under what he probably thought was an intimidating gaze. His blond hair was combed back to reveal a widow’s peak, and his face was all angles and corners. I supposed he was handsome, if you could get past the cold, calculating look in his eyes, like a snake about to strike.

“As you know, I’m Warden Jacob,” he started. “I’ve been watching you since you arrived, Brianna.”

“Okay,” I said slowly.

“Very interesting choice of companions,” he mused.

“Not that interesting,” I said with a shrug. I may have looked like an indolent, uncooperative brat, but I was ready for whatever he was working up to. He must have a reason for calling me in instead of leaving me to Noah’s sadistic tortures. Surely he didn’t care that much that I’d taken help from a demon. If they cared that much about keeping us separate, they wouldn’t have thrown us all in prison together.

“Do you realize,” Jacob said slowly, tapping his index fingers together as he stared at me over the tent of his fingers, “How difficult it is for a prisoner—any prisoner—to get close to the boys you’ve chosen as friends?”

So it wasn’t about Shade at all. It was about the chaos twins.

“I’m sure it’s not too hard,” I said with a smirk. “They’ll be best friends with anyone with a vagina for a few days, at least.”

“But you’re not just anyone, are you, Brianna?” he asked, his voice a twisting snake of deceit. He was trying to trap me. I just didn’t know what he wanted me to reveal yet. I could wait him out.
