Chapter 11

Michael paced the length of his chambers. Normally time meant next to nothing to him. However, at this moment, the minutes seemed to drag by as slowly as centuries. He was, at least, unobserved here. He had to get out. He closed his eyes and spun in place, moving toward the balcony, passing beneath the arch that led outside. He stood for a moment, staring out. Never before had he felt trapped. His mind spun as he passed into the sunshine. The instant he stepped out of the haven of his quarters, a million voices in prayer filled his skull, along with the ache of those million hearts.

He could feel himself standing on the edge of a great precipice and all it would take to tip him off was one more thing. That thing came in the form of Raphael landing lithely on the railing. He perched there, wings outstretched as he watched Michael warily. “Well? Did you get the answers you wanted?” Michael’s voice was rife with anger.

Rafe was unperturbed. As an angel of healing and mercy, his temper was difficult to stir. “Yes. I did. And you are wrong. Uriel has no desire to come home. I am sorry.”

Michael stared at his brother and then released a breath of annoyance. “He doesn’t mean that. He can’t mean it.”

“Oh, I assure you, he does. He is starting to fall in love with that woman.” Rafe’s voice held a note of curiosity. “She has a spine, I must give her that, but I am not sure what impact on all this she will have. More than that, Sethariel approached her.”

Michael tipped his head lightly to the side and braced his hands on the railing, gripping more powerfully than he realized, the marble cracking beneath his fingers. “I should have known he was lying.”

Rafe shrugged. “He lies. He is the trickster after all. The Almighty did create mischief as much as he did anything else.”

He could feel those silver eyes on him, and Michael couldn’t stand the pity he found there when he raised his gaze to meet Rafe’s. “We’re not going to be able to help him, are we?”

“Michael, I know you want to. And yes, you could order us to stand before our King and defy him, but the consequences of such an act are that we join him in exile and leave home unguarded. War is coming at some point; you know that. And though we shall emerge victorious, it will still be a bloody, terrible victory. Without us here, that victory might very well never happen and the entirety of the realm will plunge into darkness. Do you really want to be the one who tips those scales?”

The logic in his brother’s words could not be denied. Michael closed his eyes and shook his head. “I want everything to be as it was. He never should have been cast aside. He was the best, in intent, of us all.”

“We are imperfect beings, created by a perfect being.
