After darkness comes the light

Liam broke every speed limit on his way to the Davenport’s place. Just as he was pulling into the drive, his phone rang.

Seeing Morgan’s face on the screen, he answered it.

“Are you okay?” he asked.

“Yes,” she said quickly. “I’m fine.”

“I’m just pulling in.” He parked behind a black pickup truck.

“Roy is here,” she said. Her voice sounded slightly off. “I’m okay. I feel so embarrassed.”

“What happened” he asked, getting out of the car and rushing to the front door.

“I showered.” She groaned. “I guess…”

He stepped inside and saw her sitting on the sofa, wrapped in a white terry robe. When she saw him, she hung up her phone.

He rushed to her and wrapped his arms around her. She looked pale and, as he held her, she was shaking.

“I guess I passed out,” she said into his shoulder.

“You took a shower alone?” He leaned back and looked at her. Instantly, he noticed her cast was gone. Her right leg was propped up on the sofa. It looked thinner than the other one and extremely pale. He worried that she may have injured it.

“How’s your leg? Did you fall on it?”

“No, I fell on my hip and shoulder. I must have banged my head.” She reached up and touched the back of her head. He ran his fingers over it gently and noticed a small bump. She winced slightly.

“The gate was open,” Roy said. “When I banged on the front door, no one answered, so I let myself in to do a wellness check. I found Morgan crumpled on the floor inside that bathroom.” He motioned to the massage area.

Liam looked around. “Where in god’s name are your parents?” he growled out. “You could have been seriously injured.”

“I…” Morgan started, but just then her mother walked out, laughing up at a very young man wearing only swimming trunks. When she noticed the three of them watching her and saw Morgan in a robe, she dropped her hand from the man’s arm. “Oh, I didn’t realize you were back,” she said to Liam, then she frowned at Roy. “Do I know you?”

“Officer Roy Marcus. I was here earlier with my partner Becca,” Roy supplied.

Liam watched Victoria’s face drop as she took a step away from the younger man.

“What’s happened?” she asked, sounding concerned.

“Morgan fell and knocked herself out. She was out so long that I was able to drive all the way here from work. I called Roy to rush over and do a wellness check when I couldn’t reach you or Thomas.” His arm tightened slightly around Morgan. “You should have been here,” he added, his eyes going to the young man, who quickly left.

Victoria walked closer. “Are you okay?” she asked Morgan.

“Yes, I…” she started, but Liam jumped in.

“She could have seriously injured her leg now that her cast is off,” he said, feeling his anger grow. “Where is Thomas?”

“He’s at the country club,” Victoria answered.

“Liam, really, I’m fine,” Morgan said, touching his hand.

“I trusted them.
