2.3.3 Paak Sau (Slapping Hand)

Purpose:

• Move an incoming attack from the line of attack by approaching from the side

• Act as a guard when moving your body from the line of attack

• Make room for a simultaneous punch

Paak sau is primarily used to approach an attack from the outside. Any time an attack comes at you with an exposed out-door, paak sau is a good candidate.

To perform paak sau, put your wrist on the centerline and point your fingers to the ceiling while keeping your palm facing away from you. You will then use the palm of your hand to redirect the incoming attack. When you point your fingers to the ceiling, it effectively gets your hand out of the way so you can block using the heel of the hand (the forearm bone) and not the fingers. The lower on your hand you make contact with the opponent’s attack, the more successful your block will be. “Block with the bone,” we say.
