Chapter 16

David walked Lorenza over to his desk, where the book was lying open. He pointed at the page it was opened to and asked, “Any idea as to what the translation of this is?” David waited, holding his breath.

“For you are already excommunicated, praise your Lord, for he is not coming,” Lorenza said and then waited a long minute, looking down at the book. David just stood there looking at her. How could she have known what the missing word was?

“Maranatha? It is not Latin,” David said very quietly.

“Mara Natha. Aramaic. For praise your lord. Only used once in the New Testament and once in Didache 10:14 of the Apostolic Father’s Collection.”

“What does it mean?”

“It’s a curse. It says by possessing this book, you are already condemned, and pray as much as you wish; your God will not come and save you from the horrors waiting inside this tome.” She stood there looking at him. “It goes on to state, ‘Whoever opens this book and reads from it shall have the fate of the world tied to his wills and have the world forever seeking to devour his soul’.”

“Excuse me?” David blurted.

“Do you have any idea why Father Kennedy would want you to have this book?”

“Absolutely no idea. I have never even seen this book until today. He never had it with him during his exorcisms and never even spoke of it.”

“David, the Vatican claimed they gave him this book in aiding him to perform exorcisms. However, based on what we just read, I highly doubt that to be true. Nonetheless, they are adamant about having this book in their possession.”

“Who does? The Pope?” David enquired.

“I don’t believe the interest rises that high, but a certain cardinal in the College does.”

David flipped to another page in the book with an illustration depicting winged beings throwing dark creatures through what looked to be a doorway in the sky. “Any idea what this represents?”

“I have seen something like this before in the dungeons of Venice. It represents the Crystal Sphere.”

David stared at Lorenza for a long time and then back down at the book. “What in the hell is a Crystal Sphere?”

“The Crystal Sphere,” Lorenza corrected him.

“The Crystal Sphere.” David repeated, using the same emphasis as Lorenza. “What in the hell is The Crystal Sphere?”

“It is said the Crystal Sphere is the access point to a place, a pocket universe if you will, that exists outside of our known four-dimensional field, or applying a more generally utilized but largely misapplied term, ‘the space-time continuum.’ This place was used for the Demons as a humane method of imprisoning them - to prevent further bloodshed of both angels and demons during the Erytherian Uprising.”

“I’m sorry, during what?” David responded, appearing frustrated while closing his eyes and shaking his head.

“I’m very sorry, David. I know this is a lot to take in,” Lorenza said softly while putting her hand on his shoulder. “Would you mind taking a walk with me? I would like to show you something.
