Elias unfurled his wings and soared in a sheet of light into the throne room of grace. There he laid the petitions of his charge at the King’s feet. In a harmonic chanting of praise, Elias waited for his Master’s reply.

A knock sounded at the door, and Katie and Leah exchanged startled glances.

“It’s just me,” Abigail called from the entry. “I thought I would have seen you at noon when I delivered sandwiches—” Abigail reached the kitchen and halted. “Hello, Leah.”

Katie stood. “Have a seat and I’ll make you a cup of tea.”

“Nay, I can’t stay.” She glanced at Leah again but then continued, “I agreed to collect and deliver the housewares. Did you have things to donate?”

Katie nodded. “The boxes are in the spare bedroom.” She glanced at Leah. No wonder the girl caught Abigail off guard. The girl’s eyes were blotchy from crying. “I’ll be right back, Leah.”

Abigail sidled beside Katie. “That’s Amos Mast’s daughter.”

Katie smiled. “Jah, I know.”

Abigail tipped her head slightly sideways, then wagged her head as though disregarding any more thought on the subject.

Katie was grateful.

“I thought Seth enjoyed himself at supper.” Abigail elbowed Katie’s ribs. “Despite you hammering him about those bees.”

“You think so? I couldn’t tell.” Katie pushed the spare room’s door open. She hoped that if she acted uninterested, her sister-in-law would stop trying so hard to find her a husband.

“Isaac said nett to push things, but I’m going to have Seth over for another supper. I would’ve invited him today, but I didn’t see him working with the men.”

Katie picked up a box loaded with items to donate and handed it to Abigail. “You should listen to your wise husband and nett push things.” She stooped down and grabbed the other box. “Besides, Seth isn’t from our district.”

“He can build beehives anywhere.”

“Well, first he needs to move the ones near the schul.” Katie headed out the door. She walked fast through the sitting room and hoped to get outside before Abigail continued. She didn’t want Leah overhearing them talk about her uncle.

“You need to get it in your head the schul isn’t going to be rebuilt. You have to move on,” Abigail said once they were outside. She opened the back hatch of the buggy. “Get married. You’re nett too old yet. You can have children.”

Katie lowered the box onto the floorboard. Her sister-in-law wasn’t about to stop. If she thought Katie wasn’t interested in Seth, Abigail would fix her up with one of the other men who came to help with the rebuilding.

Abigail reached into the buggy. “You forgot to take the Budget,” she said, handing the paper to Katie. “Your storm article was exceptional.”

“Denki,” she said, cautious not to let the compliment go to her head. Not the way she allowed pride to overrule sound judgment when she wrote the articles about the angel sighting. She would rather change the subject than risk talking too much about writing. “Have you heard anything about the bishop?”

Abigail frowned. “I thought Isaac stopped by earlier and told you.
