Pipe met us as promised at twelve forty-five and the three of us struck out for the lighthouse. We left Babs on guard in a porch chair. The path seemed less treacherous in the light of day. Plus, I knew where I was going this time. But the sight of the burned out structure was still alarming, even though I knew what to expect.

“Why are we doing this again?” I asked my two companions. The short one didn’t answer.

Pipe said, “I thought you wanted to see it. And Katie loves the lighthouse. James used to bring her down here all the time.”

Seemed like a strange place to take a kid, but James was a strange guy, no doubt about it. Katie was skipping along at my side like we were going to Disneyland. We were all three still in long sleeves as the day hadn’t really warmed up, although the mid-sixties temperature with the cool, clean air off the ocean still felt wonderful to me.

Katie picked up the pace and zipped a few yards ahead of us. I took the opportunity to quietly ask Pipe what the hell Miss Klein’s deal was. She laughed and shook her head.

“How do you even know her?” I asked. Surely, the childless scientist types didn’t have much reason to mix with the preschool teacher?

“Oh, it’s a pretty small community out here. And Delgado likes to make it one big happy family, you know, with potlucks and stuff like that from time to time. He always includes the civilian contractors like her and me. There’s nothing really wrong with her, she just bugs me, you know?”

I knew.

“For a teacher who’s supposed to be so worried about Katie, she barely said two words to her—did you notice?” I said.

“Yeah, well, she’s got poor Gato under her spell now, so I think most of her energy is focused on that,” Pipe said ruefully. “So what were you guys talking about inside there for so long anyway?”

Before I could answer, Katie had heard me say her name and bopped back to us, wanting to know what we were talking about. I told her the topic was Miss Klein.

“She liked my daddy,” Katie volunteered.

“I’ll bet she did,” Pipe muttered under her breath.

“Did your daddy like her?” I asked Katie.

Her face wrinkled as she considered this. “I don’t think so,” she said.

“And how about you—do you like her?” I asked.

“She’s okay,” was her tempered judgment. She went back to concentrating on her skipping, opening up a twenty foot lead on us. We trudged along behind her.

“I guess I can’t really blame Patsy,” Pipe said. “She’s stuck out here with all these horndog Navy guys—I think she’s worked her way through almost every one of them by now.”

I’d thought about not telling Pipe about the letter and photo, but in the end it was too juicy a tidbit to keep to myself. Besides, I trusted her discretion.

“Whoa.” Pipe whistled. “I guess she’s moving on to the civilians now.” She shook her head disparagingly.
