Chapter Eight

Okay, so shifting was the worst idea ever. I’d made it about five large leaps before a woman jumped in front of my path. I growled, screeching to a halt with my claws digging into the dirt and grass.

"Whoa there, big guy," she called out to me. "Not the enemy. And I'm all for you chasing after the idiot running like a bat out of hell, but I suggest you shift into a form that relies on English and not chuffs to communicate."

Shit. I got her point. Elias--as I forced myself to refer to him for now--and I had never gone through the soul union ceremony, so the option to telepathically speak to him was impossible. I shut my tiger down, and shifted back to human form. The woman tossed my trench coat back at me. When did she have time to grab that?

As I hurriedly pulled it around my body, I studied her quickly. “Do I know--”

“Yes.”

“Wait, are you--?”

“Yes again. Now move your ass and go after him before he runs into something that hurts him. I’ll wait here while you unscrew your totally screwup.”

Well, did not expect her to be here, but then again, I didn’t expect my tiger to terrify the fuck out of Elias either. I nodded my thanks, and took off at a sprint after the rapidly retreating back of Elias. I heard a “Good luck, you’ll need it” shouted from behind him.

Why had my tiger scared him so badly? I'd even played nice. Bowing my head, and putting out as much calm, non-confrontational energy as possible. It hadn't stopped the pure terror his expression morphed into. Fuck. Fuck. And triple fuck. I can't mess this up. I just can't.

Not that I hadn't already done a piss poor job considering the stilted flow of our conversation that went fucking nowhere. My mind had been so caught up in seeing him, my senses overwhelmed by his nearness and achingly familiar scent, that I'd botched up everything that sputtered out of my mouth.

Fortunately, as scared as he was, Elias's shorter legs were no match for my longer ones. I caught up with him as he reached the corner of what remained of the old building. Grabbing his arm, I hauled him to a stop and jerked him around to face me. In hindsight, touching him was a horrendously foolish thing to do considering the current circumstances.

I deserved the right hook to my face in response to my action. My lip split open on impact, and out of instinct, I licked at the droplet of blood that formed.

Elias's eyes widened at the behavior. "Let go of me, you goddamned monster," he growled so loudly, it almost didn't sound human.

I immediately dropped my hand off his arm and backed up several steps. "I'm sorry, I'm sorry. I didn't think. Please don't run away again. I'm begging you, don't run. I have no intention to hurt you. I just want to talk to you."

I kept both hands where he could see them, and sank to my knees.
