Early the next morning Delaney woke to an enticing scent. Opening her eyes and stretching, she inhaled deeply and smiled. She sat up and pushed back the covers so she could get out of bed. The second she put her feet on the floor, she realized what a bad idea that was. At almost that exact moment, Meatball pressed his face to the crack of the closed door and howled pitifully.

She heard footsteps and smiled when she heard Walker shushing the dog. “No! Don’t wake her! Come on, you should go outside to play,” he said. Then she heard the door open and close and Mr. Meatball barking as he did his morning routine of barking as he ran around the property announcing that he was back.

A good five minutes later her bedroom door eased open and Walker peeked around the door.

“I’m awake,” she called out.

“I’m sorry. I’ve been trying to keep him away from the door all morning. I wanted you to rest as long as possible. I’ve just let him out and put Fluff in her enclosure as well.”

“Thank you. And it’s okay. He probably heard me moving around.”

“How do you feel?” he asked.

“I have a little headache, and some soreness behind my eyes, but I’m better than I thought I’d be,” she admitted.

“And your ankle?” he asked, stepping into the bedroom once he realized she was sufficiently covered and not undressed.

“It felt okay, but the moment I put weight on it, it was not happy,” Delaney said.

“It probably tightened up overnight. Let’s get you fed, then I’ll massage it again.”

“You don’t have to do that,” she said, feeling a little embarrassed at the fact that he pampered her so.

“Of course, I do. It is my honor to provide you with all things, including comfort.”

Delaney looked up at him, shaking her head. “Wherever you’re from, a girl would be crazy to leave there, if the way you treat me is the same way all the men treat the women who live there.”

He gave a half-smile, but didn’t address her comment. “I’ve been preparing breakfast. Are you hungry?” he asked as he lifted her into his arms.

“Yes, but, bathroom first,” she said.

Walker nodded and stepped into her bathroom, before walking over to the toilet. “Shall I help?”

“No, I can get it,” she said, standing on her good leg and holding onto the small half wall between her bathtub and her toilet.

“I’ll wait outside,” he said, hurrying to leave the room and pull the door closed behind himself.

He waited until he heard her call, then went back in to get her. “You finished in here?” he asked.

“Need to wash my hands,” she said.

He walked over to the double sink and held her so she could turn and wash her hands. After she’d dried her hands on the hand-towel, he carried her into the kitchen and sat her at the dining table just a few feet from the kitchen in its adjoining space. “After we eat, we’ll work on that ankle some more.
