CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE
Julian
Nothing had prepared me for Quinnâs lips on mine.
That said, I couldnât claim I hadnât longed for it. Despite my insistence that I wanted her friendship, of course Iâd always forbidden myself to even think of this. Even dreaming of someone, more than a fleeting yearning, could feel like robbing them of their consent, so I had never ventured there.
But tonight, after everything that had happened so far, that fire in her eyes and the flush to her neck and cheeks sent heat through me. I allowed it to, and it lit me up. So when our lips collided, flames burst to life.
Truth be told, Iâd never wanted anything the way I wanted Quinn DarlingâI acknowledged it now. My body had known, but I wasnât a man who paid heed to his base instincts when my brain had always provided the more rational path in any situation. Having Quinn at armsâ length had been something, had caused a bit of a stir inside. Not enough, but better than the nothing Iâd had for every other minute Iâd lived in Silverton or been away. Far better than before I knew she existed, before sheâd dropped like water over the ink on my page and blurred every clear line Iâd ever drawn.
Her hands at my neck urged me closer as she took from my mouth, a kiss so comprehensive, I couldnât imagine what might be better. Then I stepped closer with her pull and pressed against her so she was trapped. I held her to me, one hand at her bare shoulder and the other at the curve of her waist.
The contact sent tremors of sensation through my mind, synapses firing into small revelations with every press of her lips, every slide of her hands against my skin.
This was no ordinary kiss. Not like anything Iâd ever had, not that this came as a surprise. Quinnâs kiss was passion and fire, but it was fury too. While I disagreed with her assessment of what Iâd done, I was beginning to understand. If I told her that her reaction to my lie had proven me right, and now, that I wanted her more than I ever did, sheâd end the kiss.
I did nothing but kiss her back. I wanted to say her name. I wanted to pull her back and look in her eyes to see the desire thereâdesire for me. Not my name or my moneyâthe money mightâve made this very occurrence less likely. In fact, I knew it did.
However angry she was, part of it was that I hadnât simply asked her. Iâd considered it but thought this was the better offer, both for her and me. For her, sheâd benefit, and for me, Iâd guarantee she wouldnât change her mind. Weâd chug along easily as friends, the job going away in a poof of smoke worth nothing more than a shrug since what was done was done, and here we were so why not enjoy the time. Yes, I
