Chapter 2

I WAS SITTING ON THE sturdy bench in the waiting room, with my head in my hands.

The surgery was taking forever, and even though I knew I should let the doctors do their job, it was impossible for me to stay calm and not think about the worst.

Caden wasn’t going to die.

He couldn’t.

But it wasn’t in my power to do anything about that, was it?

All I could do was wait and hope for the best. Deep down, I knew I shouldn’t care this much about whether he lived or died.

He and I were never going to happen and our relationship was impossible.

Hell, I’d done things to make sure we’d never get back together, and yet, somehow, I couldn’t stay away from him. Something always happened to bring us back together.

And here I was now.

Worrying about whether my enemy was going to survive, because if he didn’t, my heart was going to break into a thousand little pieces, and I didn’t know how I’d ever be able to put it back together.

And Caden...

Instead of getting himself to a hospital or somewhere for help—I was sure the Dinartis had a clinic and doctors who could treat Caden too—he’d come to see me.

So close to dying, and all he’d wanted was to see me one last time.

Ah hell.

We were doomed.

We were so fucking doomed.

Unable to stay away from each other, even though hatred was the only thing that was supposed to exist between us.

“Ma’am?” A soft voice made me look up.

“Caden?” I immediately asked, my heart jumping all the way into my throat.

Please be fine.

Please be fine.

“Is the surgery over?” I asked, unable to wait for an answer.

“Yes, and right now, we have good news,” the blonde said. “We still need to see how he’ll respond to treatment, and he’s not completely out of danger yet, but we’re hopeful that he’ll make a full recovery.”

“Thank you.” A wave of relief overcame me.

“But there’s one problem,” she said, and I met her light blue eyes.

“What kind of a problem?” I couldn’t hide the tension in my voice.

“He can’t stay here for more than a few hours. It’s too much of a risk, I’m afraid. It would be really great if you could find another place for him.”

Shit. “Are you sure you can’t just—”

“I’m sorry, but if he stays, we’ll be putting the whole clinic at risk, and your life is in danger too. I hope you understand. If you brought more of your men here, then maybe—”

“Yeah, I understand.” I bobbed my head.

The last thing I could do was get more men here, but then what was I going to do?

Get in touch with Caden’s family?

But wouldn’t that be too risky? They’d probably have a bunch of questions, or they’d assume I or my family had done something to their heir.

No, I couldn’t let them have Caden.

But then what could I do? My family would freak out about the whole thing too, but maybe I could convince them to help me.

Except, they might use Caden as a bargaining chip to get what they wanted from the Dinartis.
