Chapter 18

Zeke stayed in North Carolina longer than she’d expected and then when he left, he went to Florida to fish. His story was that he’d be so busy working on the Sirens, he wouldn’t have time for his normal leisure activities. Rachel kind of accepted that, but it was the next trip that made her realize there was a problem. After he left Florida, he went back to Carolina for a few weeks and then he went to New York. When he came home, he left again. He had to go on the road to scout talent for the team. He was traveling all over the US. They’d been married for three months, and she’d barely seen him.

Rachel stirred the straw in her water and finished it in one drink. She put her glass down. “I saw him more when we lived apart.”

“Well, the team is a big undertaking, and it’s not an in-state job,” Harper offered in Zeke’s defense.

Rachel rolled her eyes. “I don’t know. Why doesn’t he ask me to go with him? We’ve hung out on his business trips before.”

“Why do you think he’s not asking?”

“Maybe he’s taking someone else.”

Harper sighed. “I don’t think so, honey. I don’t think he’d do that to you.”

“He’s not doing anything to me. That’s the problem.”

“Are you Rachel Bennett?” A voice came from behind Rachel and she turned to see what Barbie Doll was speaking; and a real live Barbie it was. The woman was tall, in her heels, she was well over six feet, and seriously thin. She had a mane of wavy, thick hair that most women would give a kidney to have.

“Who’s asking?”

“Sorry, I thought you’d recognize me. My name is Serene.” She held out her hand for Rachel to shake.

Rachel looked up and down from the woman’s face to her hands. She wasn’t shaking it. “What can I do for you?”

“You’re Zeke’s new wife, right? I’m sorry I missed the wedding. I was in Paris for a fashion show.”

Rachel nodded.

“Zeke texted me a month or so before your wedding asking me to marry him, so imagine my surprise when I found out he was having an actual wedding.”

“A real one,” Harper interjected, smartly. “With a whole wife.”

Serene smiled tightly before saying, “Well, tell the rascal I said hello. If I’d known he was serious, I would have told him yes and beat you to the punch.” She turned and strolled away.

“Who is she? Why does she have one name?” Rachel asked.

“She’s a model. You’ve never seen her? She does all the Chaguall fashion campaign stuff.” Harper cleared her throat. “She also dated Zeke for a while.”

Rachel looked back at the woman. She’d joined a group of other model-types at the bar.

“Serene,” Rachel said. “I remember, he told me about her—briefly. He dated her for almost four months. That was a long time for Zeke.” Rachel looked around and waved the waitress to the table. “I need a Coke. Add a lemon.”

“She’s graduated from water to soda. Oh, oh, it’s bad,” Harper teased.
