Chapter 7

Deane’s mind was made up. Come hell or high water, he was going to marry Chloe O’Shea. She’d touched his heart with her understanding and forgiveness, and she’d thrilled his body with her openness and ardor in bed. She was everything he could possibly have asked for in a woman, more than he deserved, and nothing would stand in the way of him spending the rest of his life with her.

All of that was decided within the half hour that they lay tangled up together, drifting in and out of sleep, after making love. Even with the window closed, Deane could hear the sound of the ocean mingled with Chloe’s soft breathing, and smell the salt of the sea along with that of her skin. For the first time in ages, he found himself in a state of complete relaxation and utter happiness.

“I hate the fact that we can’t stay here forever,” he sighed as he rolled her to her back and gazed down at her.

“Who says we cannot stay here forever?” Chloe asked sweetly in return, a mischievous spark in her eyes.

Deane laughed deep in his chest and bent down to kiss her. “My aunt, for one. She likely has a thousand, useless social events planned for me over the next few days. And your brother and sister would likely miss you if you never returned home.”

“I’m certain Fergus could do without me,” she said, though Deane wasn’t entirely certain whether the wistfulness in her tone was compassion for her brother or a feeling that he didn’t care whether she was home or not. He doubted it was the latter. He couldn’t imagine anyone not wanting Chloe in their lives if they could have her.

He dipped down to kiss her again, feeling the tell-tale stir in his body that said if he didn’t get up and dress, they’d be there for another few hours. “Forever will come soon enough,” he told her, hoping she would understand the promise for what it was. He couldn’t make any declarations to her right then and there. He’d promised his oldest sister, Victoria, that she would be the first to know when he’d made up his mind about a bride. But the sooner he sent that telegram, the sooner he could reintroduce himself to Lord Fergus O’Shea and ask for Chloe’s hand.

“And now,” he said, kissing her lips again, then her chin, then her shoulder, and daring to go so far as to momentarily suck one of her nipples, causing her to gasp, “we need to get up and go about our lives so that steps can be taken to bring those lives together sooner.”

Chloe’s eyes lit with sudden excitement, but she kept her lips pressed firmly shut. Which, of course, made it impossible for Deane to resist kissing them again until they softened and loosened and let him in. He let his tongue play with hers for a moment and pressed his body into hers, until she writhed and sighed under him, growing far too warm for either of their own good.
