Chapter 7

Mia was very curious and her enthusiasm was very obvious as they made their way through a wooded area. The plants were somewhat similar to what she had grown up with, but there were some key difference. She began questioning him nearly immediately.

For his part, Maxton enjoyed just watching her expressions shifting and changing as she encountered something else. It was fascinating encountering a species without having to consider how to kill it or capture it. The experience was all new to the Lord Commander, and he found himself becoming more and more intrigued by the creature in front of him.

“What’s this one?” She was pointing to a large flower. “It’s absolutely beautiful-“

Without thinking, he moved forward and pulled her away as the flower snapped shut where she had stood not a second before. He immediately released her and stepped away.

Avoiding her eye, he said, “That one is called a Cal trap because it eats pretty much anything.” He looked at her apologetically, “I probably should have warned you that there are several kinds of plants that are rather fond of food roughly our shape. I just didn’t realize that they had started moving so close to home.”

“Do you mean growing closer and closer? Or do they actually move?”

“Oh, they migrate. Usually they don’t come so close, but I really haven’t been home for most of the past couple of years. Now that I’m back for the foreseeable future, I will have to start driving them away again.”

Mia gave him a strange look, then looked at the plant. She leaned over and picked up a stick. She tossed it toward the flower and it snapped shut on the stick. The lower half opened, but the upper half was consuming the stick.

“That is probably the strangest plant I’ve ever heard of. Thank you very much for saving me. I suppose for saving me again actually. You seem to be quite good at it. You aren’t perhaps a firefighter are you? Or maybe a space ranger? Roaming space rescuing those too foolish for their own good.” She smiled at him, but her smile faded as she watched him slowly shake his head.

“I am not usually in the business of rescuing, no. That is definitely not part of my normal job description.”

“Well, then I suppose I should be very thankful to you then. If there is anything I can do to make you feel that it was worthwhile, let me know and I’ll see what I can do. At least while I’m here.”

“Oh, I think you have been more than entertaining enough to be worth saving a few more times, at least. I’ve never met a species like you, and it’s very … educational?”

Mia threw her head back and laughed. Without thinking, she reached out and touched his arm as she regained her balance, “You know, you try to come across as really tough and emotionless, but that really isn’t you is it?” She poked his belly, then Mia’s attention was drawn in a different direction, “Oh my, what is that?” She pointed at an animal moving away from them.
