Mathadar

Flexing his stomach muscles and turning from side to side, Mathadar felt no trace of pain. “Your skills at healing are unmatched. My healer is Pharon and even he’s never healed me so quickly.”

The healer tried to keep the happiness off his face after receiving such a sincere and enthusiastic compliment. “I am familiar with Pharon. We trained together several times. I am glad to know he still lives and practices the healing arts. Though my specialty is healing battle wounds, his is cloning and repairing organs.” Glancing from Mathadar to Cassandra and back again, he added, “Lucky for you that was not required to heal this wound, otherwise your recovery time would have been much longer.”

“My queen is anxious to see me on my feet again and you have made it so. Therefore you have my deepest gratitude.” Mathadar opened one wing and Cassandra stepped close enough for him to wrap it around her slight form. “See my queen, I am well once more.”

Looking up at him, she made the mating gesture again, showing all her square, blunt little teeth. “Great, no more getting yourself shot. I don’t think my heart can take seeing you injured again.”

“I would die a thousand painful deaths to protect you, my queen,” Mathadar replied.

The healer chuckled. “You two are like couples of old, before the parasites invaded our queens. It good to see such relationships are not lost to our kind.”

“If we manage to get back to the Naxis the women will be fighting each other to get a little face time with Draconian guys.”

The healer smiled indulgently at her. “They may be excited to meet the warriors. However, healers are not high status enough to hope for a female to take notice of us.”

“Wrong again, little man. Human women love healers. In our society they’re considered an even higher status than soldiers.”

The healer made a sound of surprise and dropped down into his chair. The stunned expression on his face warmed Mathadar’s soul, but they had other places to be this morning. Though they only got a hundred microns of sleep, it was enough to ensure they were alert again.

Looking down at his queen, he asked, “Are you certain you wish to visit the hatchery?”

“Yep, I want to make sure the little ones have everything they need. I don’t want anything bad happening to them on my watch.”

“That is commendable, but we should hurry. We are coming up on Strador Five and I wish to be well prepared for our mission.”

“Let’s make this quick then.”

Mathadar led her out of the medical unit through an endless maze of corridors and to a lift that took them to another level before they arrived at a cavernous room. It had dozens of glass-fronted incubators lining the walls. Some of them had small hatchlings or large eggs inside. Several oversized males stepped forward, blocking her view. They were Rovanda’s former breeders and they seemed protective of their young. Cassandra had noticed that breeders were larger, like the queens they served.
