Trent tightened the cloth around Akito’s wound, and it darkened to red almost immediately. He didn’t have an excuse anymore. Especially not with Akito so weak, so close to death. That bite might save him. Or kill him. He hoped for the former.

Not good. Akito’s skin was ashen, and sweat dripped freely down his temple.

Trent snarled into the air because Akito’s eyes were unfocused, and he had no idea how much the omega was aware of his surroundings anymore.

To make matters worse. . . .

“You caught him first. Good game,” Raj said as he stalked out of the trees.

He’d been there, watching, the entire time. Trent had smelled him. Sensed him, and yet he hadn’t made one move to catch Akito.

If this whole thing was just a game to him—

Then Raj met Trent’s eyes. “I change. You hold him and ride. It’s the fastest way back. If we don’t move, he’ll die.”

“You would let another alpha ride you?” Trent asked, incredulous.

Raj smiled. “Would you rather we let him bleed out? I know you don’t trust me, but I also know not all alphas are like our father. He wouldn’t care if an omega died for him. You do.”

Trent wasn’t sure how to respond to that, and Raj didn’t give him the chance. He bent and shifted back into his wolf shape while Trent gathered Akito in his arms and climbed on.

When the race first started, Raj acted like he was seriously pursuing Akito. He snipped at Trent as they darted through the woods, trying to throw him off course. Slow him down. Then he ran ahead toward Akito’s scent, and Trent gave chase.

When he found Akito, Raj wasn’t with him.

Not until Akito threw the chair out of the window did Trent even notice his younger brother’s musk.

Hiding.

Waiting.

Now this.

He buried one hand in Raj’s thick fur, while his other supported Akito, and they ran.

It seemed to take twice as long to reach the edge of the forest than it had to get to the clearing, but Raj was moving at top speed. His flank was slick with sweat, and he panted heavily when they arrived.

Cole and Noriko were the first to approach.

“He needs medical help. Now,” Trent ordered.

Raj nodded his approval, and the wolves of his pack moved, showing Trent the way.

“What happened?” Cole growled. He looked as pale as Akito.

Trent clung to him, watching each ragged breath Akito took. Here he thought Boss Yagami would be the end of his omega, and it could be something as simple as a stupid boar!

“Boar attack. He was trying to protect me,” Trent said, and his voice caught on the last word. He hoped no one but Cole noticed.

Raj’s medical facility was unsurprisingly better than his own, though after the attack there was no saying how much of his own could be restored. It was tucked into an old human hospital, but the equipment was clean and the electricity worked, probably due to the solar panels on the roof.

A few humans and several wolves were on hand, and they took Akito from Trent’s arms, leaving them empty and bloody.
