Chapter Ten

“Mommy, you got a package. Do you want me to get it?” Ivy asked as we walked out of the house to start our day. I looked at the rose gold wrapped gift box and knew it had to be from Wesley. I hadn’t spoken to him since I sent him a text breaking things off with us before we got in too deep.

As much as I was feeling Wesley, I was utterly embarrassed about the situation that happened the night we took the kids out together. I didn’t want him to feel like I needed him to save me or be the one who pulled me out of the dark space I was in. I thought it would be best for me to step back and reevaluate the entire situation before I got caught up with Wes and only used him to get through all of my pain.

“When are we going out with Jocey again?”

“Who?” I asked Ivy as I picked up the package and locked the front door.

“My friend, Jocey.”

“His name is Jovie, Ivy. Remember what I told you about people’s names. If you don’t want people to call you by the wrong name, you have to try to remember theirs.”

“I know, mama. When are we going out again? We had a lot of fun.” Ivy chirped. I helped her into the back seat and then strapped her into the seatbelt before walking around to get into the car. In those few seconds, I tried to come up with a good enough excuse for us not to have to see them again, but I couldn’t think of anything.

As soon as my phone connected to the car’s Bluetooth system, I put on the Disney musical playlist, and Ivy began singing loudly to Let It Go. It was the perfect distraction on our way to school.

I was zoned out in my thoughts, replaying the events from the other night. Thankfully, both Jovie and Ivy were asleep the entire time, so they missed the whole incident. After Calvyn was driven away in the back of a police cruiser and Dawn was carried away on a stretcher, their vehicles were towed away from my property since I wanted no further contact with either of them. Wesley got Ivy in her bed for me then he laid Jovie down in the guest bedroom. He didn’t want to leave me by myself since I was visibly shaken up, so I agreed to let him stay for a little while until I fell asleep.

“Are you open to talking about your history with that dude?” After my shower, I was laid out on the couch, and Wesley sat on the loveseat across from me, sipping from a whiskey glass.

“I don’t have anything else to say besides what you already know. I’m so confused about why he even came over here. His marrying Dawn made it very clear that he didn’t want me…I just don’t get it. It feels like he stripped me of everything, yet he pops up trying to talk like it’s something else to discuss.
