The only thing keeping me from driving like I didn’t have any fucking sense was the fact that my son was in the car. I was conflicted in how I was feeling right now. Part of me felt like Lovey was doing too much at the hospital. She could have sat there and not said a word to Alicia. She of all people knew what happened when you entertained a fucking clown. They continued to put on a show.

The other part of me understood her frustration as a parent dealing with potentially losing her children’s father and as a woman being taunted by the mistress of the same person. Alicia was a foul ass bitch. I could guarantee that she wasn’t here out of concern, but to guarantee that Carson’s ass didn’t make it out before their divorce was final.

If he died, she stood gain a ton of money. Between life insurance policies, his 401K, and what was in his accounts, she’d never have to work again, especially if there wasn’t a prenup in place or he’d listed her as the beneficiary on his policies. In her eyes, she had a lot riding on him dying. She couldn’t have known that Lovey was his proxy. Hell, Lovey didn’t even know. I would have thought he’d list his parents or a trusted family member.

When I pulled up to my parents’ house, I hopped out and grabbed Dallas and his diaper bag. He had a full stomach, and the ride over took him out. He didn’t even stir when I removed him from the car seat. Heading up the front steps, I fumbled with the right key. I was thankful when my mama opened the door.

“Hey, baby,” she said, kissing my cheek before taking Dallas from me and allowing me inside. “Nana’s little nugget is tired, huh?” She smothered Dallas’s cheeks with kissed.

“He just ate. Ma, I need you to watch him for a while.”

“What’s wrong?”

“Carson was in a bad car accident this morning.”

“Hmmm… the devil finally coming to claim his child?” She rolled her eyes.

“Ma!”

“I’m sorry. You know I hate that bastard. How are the kids holding up?”

“We haven’t told them yet. We were gonna wait to see what the doctors say.”

“I understand that.” She looked at me skeptically. “What’s wrong? You look bothered.”

“It’s nothing, Ma.”

“You should know by now you can’t lie to me,” she said, sitting with Dallas in her rocker. “Spit it out.”

I sighed and began telling her about yesterday and me leaving. While she understood my reasoning, she fussed at me about leaving. She said I could have slept in another room or downstairs but to never just up and leave in the middle of an argument, especially when emotions were running high.

In response to the Alicia situation, she said she would have beat her ass on Lovey’s behalf if she’d been there. I rolled my eyes, knowing that she was dead ass serious.

“Why would he choose her to be his proxy? I mean, that is a lot of responsibility for someone, especially your ex-wife.
