That afternoon, after her father left, Adria’s phone rang. This time, it was Bryson requesting a video call. She accepted it.

“Hi there,” Bryson stated, though Adria noticed he looked solemn and tired. He was walking down the hall to the main sanctuary.

“Hi,” Adria answered. “How are you?”

“I am in between rehearsals and thought about you as the chorale practice was starting soon. I had a song in mind, and I wanted you to be the lead vocalist. It’s a ballad and I think it would be great if you would start learning it,” Bryson said waited for her reaction to his request.

Adria could feel her heart start beating harder. She didn’t remove her gaze from the phone but continued to stare at Bryson. “Let me think about it. I was contemplating taking some time off from the choir,” Adria paused for a second, “But I am just not sure right now.”

Adria watched as Bryson tried to keep a supportive face on. He stopped before going further.

“Well, I hope not,” Bryson stated, “for a lot of reasons. Your presence is missed.”

Adria smiled at his words.

“I will send you the song and call you later. You can let me know if you are willing to sing it. I love you,” Bryson said.

“I love you too,” Adria quickly responded. Then the video call ended. For a few moments, her life felt normal. That was all she wanted, to get back to the place where she and Bryson were just enjoying being a couple. However, the reality was she and Bryson were facing a major challenge right now. And that was causing her to feel vulnerable and to vacillate between anger and sadness.
