Chapter Nine
Noah shook his head as he walked away from Adeleâs boarding house. When sheâd asked him what would come next, for the smallest moment, he thought sheâd been asking if he planned to kiss her goodnight. He wanted toâvery badlyâbut before he could act on the impulse, the conversation moved on. He was glad he hadnât embarrassed himselfâand of course, herâby being too rash, but he had to admit, he was disappointed, too. It was pleasant to imagine what it would be like to hold her in his arms, but it was best that he didnât allow himself those thoughts. She was an heiress, and regardless of his uncleâs progressive thinking on the matter, Noah didnât believe their classes would ever truly become equal.
The Palmers werenât quite as strict with their nighttime curfew, and Noah was able to let himself inside without causing a ruckus. He climbed the stairs to his room quietly so as not to bother anyone whoâd decided to turn in early, then hung up his jacket and tie. After loosening the buttons at his throat, he sat down at the small desk in the corner and began to write down the pertinent details of his conversation with Adele that evening.
A bullet, no strange happenings preceding it, she was alone in the well-lit room . . . It certainly sounded like she was the intended target, but why? And who? In the event of her death, the inheritance would go to charity, but no charity would hire someone to kill her so they would benefit, and the paperwork hadnât even been transferred yet. No one stood to profit if she died. The older Miss Hilton, Mathilda, would receive a generous sum, and she was wealthy of her own accord anyway. She had no reason to try any such thing. With no motive, it certainly was hard to come up with suspects, and with no suspects, theyâd never know if the danger had truly passed.
Noah rubbed his face. It was simply unfair that Adele couldnât return home where she belonged. Well, she could, but Noah would need to arrange for bodyguards both inside and outside the house, and she would hate that. It would be no kind of life at all for the vivacious young lady.
Heâd been surprised to hear her describe herself as a recluse. Heâd always thought just the oppositeâthat she had friends by the basketful. Every time heâd seen her, sheâd been surrounded by people her age, but perhaps that was all for show and they only wanted to be seen in her presence because of her status. Maybe after greeting her, they moved on, feeling like theyâd done their bit. It was all too possible to be completely alone in a room full of people.
He tried to recall if heâd ever heard any rumors about Adele, any sour words someone might have spoken in anger that would lead to a motive for this attack. Heâd heard nothingâabsolutely nothing. Heâd only heard her mentioned
