LONDON

SIS Internal Security sergeant Fred Rudolph discovered the taped door latch almost immediately. He keyed his walkie-talkie. “This is Rudolph. Looks like he took the east stairwell from five-oh-three.”

“I’m right there.”

“Watch yourself.”

Sergeant Rudolph’s partner, Gerald Novak, settled his impressive bulk in front of Schilling’s computer, which was locked into the last unauthorized query that had been made. “You’d better take a look at this, Fred.”

Rudolph came over and looked at the screen. “I thought he was looking for what he had on that pair of Ukrainians.”

“Apparently he’s making a connection. I don’t think he was merely fishing.”

“I don’t think so either. He was after something very specific. Question is how the hell did he get through the stairwell door. The alarm is still intact.”

Novak used a special security override password which unlocked the computer terminal, and backed up the series of queries. “He got in at five-fifteen, and he was automatically locked out at five-twenty-one.”

Rudolph checked his watch. It was 5:35. He keyed his walkie-talkie. “This is Rudolph. Any sign of him yet?”

“Nothing.”

“He’s had a fourteen-minute head start. Seal off all the exits. No one gets out without personal recognition, and I want all their names, no matter who it is. As soon as that’s done, we’ll start a floor-by-floor.”

“He may already be out.”

“Let’s hope not.”

“This is part of an Eastern Hemisphere Operation,” Novak said.

Rudolph’s long face looked resigned. He nodded. “Then we’d best call Mr. Morgan, as well as Mr. Schilling.”

“You’re the boss.”

“Yeah,” Rudolph said without enthusiasm.
