Chapter Twenty

My arms ached from holding Blake and Russ, but they weren’t even willing to hold my hands and walk as I headed for Susie Page’s room. To my relief, a security officer Jimmy had arranged for Susie was on duty outside her door. I wondered if maybe there would be someone watching out for Gene as well. I made a mental note to check before I left the hospital.

I spoke with the officer and then called up to the ICU. The woman who answered stated they were not to let anyone into the ICU to see Gene without the express permission of his wife.

“In fact,” I said, “be careful who you let in to see anyone in the ICU without first making sure they’re not a danger to Gene.”

The woman told me she would call security and have them send someone up to make sure Gene was safe. I thanked her and ended the call.

I convinced Susie’s security officer to allow me into her room. Susie seemed skeptical, and I think it was only because I was holding the boys that made her tell the guard to let me visit with her.

“I don’t know you, but I know who you are. You’re the detective who took the pictures of me and Gene.”

“That’s right,” I said. “I’m sorry about the misunderstanding—not on my part, but on Sandy Landrum’s.”

“I guess I can see why she thought what she did. She didn’t know I have a boyfriend.” Her face grew dark. “I had one.”

“Atticus Mize. He drives a silver Corvette, if I understand correctly.” Pulling out my phone and clicking record in the app, I asked, “So to clarify, he’s no longer your boyfriend?”

“He helped kidnap me! He was only using me all this time.”

“How do you know your . . . ex-boyfriend helped kidnap you?”

“He was one of the three who took me. He laughed when I screamed at him. I bit his arm really hard and made him bleed. He deserves more than that, and I hope he gets it. I should’ve listened to my boss. Gene didn’t like Atticus from the first time he met him. Are Gene and Sandy going to be okay? I don’t want them to separate over this.” Before I could respond, she said, “He loves her. He’s told me so several times.”

“He told me the same thing,” I assured her.

After answering several more of her questions, she asked, “Who found me? And is Gene mad at me?”

“I found you, and no, he’s not mad at you. In fact, he’s been terribly worried about you.”

“He should be angry with me. He warned me about Atticus, and I didn’t listen.”

“He’s not angry with you,” I repeated. “In fact, he and Sandy both told me how much he needs you in his business.” I hurried on before she could ask anything more about Gene at that point. “Describe the two people who helped Atticus kidnap you.”

I was not surprised to hear her describe a man and a woman who could only be Blanca and Claude, though she didn’t hear their names.
