Chapter 8

I was worried about Ren. The next day, he came out of his room and looked like he always did – and switched off. I tried to talk to him, but he pushed me away. He didn't want anything to do with me.

I had learned long ago not to take anything personally when it came to Ren. He had so many issues that he was struggling with every day, his past coming back to haunt him, especially now, that I wasn't going to get offended when he didn't want anything to do with me. Even though I had been there to help him.

After all, it was difficult for Ren to accept help. Pride was in the way.

And I wasn't going to force him to do something he wasn't comfortable with. So, after I went to check on him, and he was blunt with me, I searched for Dracus instead.

I found him in his office, taking care of admin.

"Am I intruding?" I asked.

Dracus looked up at me, his expression distant, as if back from a faraway place.

"Not at all, please, take a seat."

He was very polite, formal. Again, I decided not to take offense. After all, I hadn't expected us to be all over each other in love, kissing, and holding hands all day long. We had a different kind of relationship – one of understanding, some kind of mutual agreement. See? Growth. I was becoming better at this. Before, I would have taken everything personally. I had been upset about how everyone treated me when I had come to the Manor. Now, I was starting to understand that the guys were who they were, and apologetically so, and it was unfair of me to expect him to change.

They weren't expecting me to change. Not one moment had any of them told me that I should act differently. I had been scolded for breaking the rules, but never for being curious, inquisitive, never for wanting to know things.

They liked me just the way I was. They accepted me that way. Whenever any of them tried to teach me something – like Dracus and Theo training me, it was because they were trying to help. Not because they were trying to change me.

So, I was doing the same with them – accepting them, trying to help them, but never changing them.

"How are you doing?" I asked.

I wasn't sure if Dracus was going to give me an honest answer. I knew he was still hurting badly; he had lost his father, after all. It was a big deal – it had taken me months to get over losing my own parents. And the fact that Dracus had a great deal of pride, too. Not to mention the fact that he bottled up most of his emotions because he had so much he needed to deal with, he couldn't afford to fall apart.

"I'm doing okay," Dracus said. "Some days are better than others. I'm worried about my mother."

"How is she doing?" I asked.

"She is struggling, of course," Dracus said, "but that's not why I'm worried about her.
