“I’ll give it to you, this food is delicious,” I said with a mouthful.

“I told you. See, you’re probably used to eating that bland rich people food,” she replied. I wiped my mouth and smirked at her.

“I may be rich, but I’m still black. We eat soul food,” I let her know. She gave me a skeptical look.

“Yeah, right. If the person making it hasn’t been through any struggle, then it’s not real soul food,” she replied before stuffing a fork full of collards in her mouth.

“You have an interesting logic. However, I don’t think it has any merit,” I said.

“I’m not surprised you think that. Anyway, what’s with your brother and his wife? He ashamed of his blackness or something?”

“Nah, he’s just a spoiled rich kid who’s mad he didn’t get his way. He wanted to be the CEO of our father’s company, but the responsibility went to me. Not long after that, he slept with my wife and got her pregnant,” I explained, shocking myself. I would never discuss my past so casually, especially with a woman. Hell, I’d never told Ava why I got divorced and she and I had been sleeping together for a year.

“Damn! That’s fucked up,” she said, shaking her head. She paused briefly before cutting her eyes at me. “Oh, shoot! I’m so sorry! I shouldn’t use that kind of language around you. I almost forgot you’re my boss!”

Her sudden realization caused me to laugh out loud, something I hadn’t done in a long time. “It’s fine. I prefer you to be yourself, rather than pretending to be someone you’re not. It’s refreshing to speak with you,” I admitted. I watch a schoolgirl grin appear on her face.

“I’m glad to hear that. So, does this mean I can get a raise?” she asked, causing my smile to drop. She roared in laugher to the point she could barely breathe.

“Chill, I’m just kidding. You know what a joke is, right? You should loosen up some.”

“Rumi!” someone called out. We both turned our heads to see a man marching over to us with the look of death in his eyes.

“Oh lord, here we go,” she said, rolling her eyes hard.

“Aye! You ain’t see me calling you?” the man barked.

“No, because I blocked your lying, trifling ass! Get away from me, Chaos!” she said, waving him off. I watched as the man clenched his fist together.

“You cost me my job, Rumi! My wife is leaving me because of you,” he spat. Some people in the restaurant turned their attention towards us. I guess today was the day of drama. Rumi didn’t seem to be bothered by the man’s anger.

“Well, that’s what you get! You lied to me, Chaos! I had no idea you were married, and we’d been together for a year! I didn’t know you didn’t own the barbershop you worked at! I should call your wife and tell her how many times we fucked on her father’s office desk,” she barked, giving him a look of disgust.
