Chapter Twelve

With Darius, he carries me and we sprint at ungodly speeds to wherever we need to be.

With Zev, he shifts into wolf form, takes me on his back, and he runs with amazing grace and balance.

With Rune, we get into the back of a truck, and he creates an illusion to make it look like we’re not in the back of that truck.

And honestly, with a life that’s changed from no magic to way too much magic, I’m enjoying the shit out of a casual car ride to the forest.

I look at the passing countryside as we go, enamored with the old architecture that shines through in even the most inconspicuous buildings. New England has some good history, and I grew up in a family bar that was more than a hundred years old. Before visiting Europe, I felt like Rowley had some old buildings. This trip makes clear what a baby America really is.

While I take in the sights, Rune’s eyes never leave me. Nor does the look of contentment on his face.

“Yes?” I ask when I finally return his gaze. “Do I have something on my face?”

“Just your normal magnetic beauty,” he responds, dropping a line like they’re going out of style. “It was very difficult being away from you yesterday. I don’t think I fully understood how addicted to your presence I’ve become.”

Words that might sound trite coming from another mouth have my heart all a flutter when Rune says them. His sincerity is off the charts, and such things said by a creature so beautiful, it makes me feel like I really am the most important girl in the world.

“I know… I know I’m not as forward in my affections as Darius and Zev,” Rune says, not looking away from my eyes as he speaks. “It’s… complicated. I want you. I crave you. I need you. And I haven’t felt those things for anyone since my betrothed died. It feels almost disloyal, and yet I know she would want me to find happiness. I have mourned long enough, but these things take time.”

I take his hand and nod, emotion clogging my throat. “You don’t have to explain yourself to me. There’s no hurry. I’m here.” I don’t add, for now, because that feels too much like a blade in the heart for both of us. The words still sit between us, unspoken but all the more present because of it.

We drive on in silence for a few more minutes while our eyes never leave each other. It’s like a makeout sesh for our souls, just staying locked in without our physical forms getting in the way. It’s one of the most stimulating, arousing connections I’ve ever felt, to be honest. Turns out extended eye contact is hot.

It finally gets too hot and I have to break away before my body tries to join in. We both have a lot to process without lust getting in the way, especially him.

When I pull my eyes from the fae’s, I look down at my chest, rising and falling with each accelerated breath.
