Chapter 17

“Damn this!” Mag wrapped his arm around Nyssa’s shoulders. Her whole body shook with panic. And he was in a right fury, adrenaline pumping through his veins.

The driver’s face ballooned with swelling, his eyes glassy.

“Sit him down,” he ordered Evan as he gathered his artifacts off the couch and onto another chair. “Get the first-aid kit behind the bar and bring back Sandrine.”

Evan laid the driver onto the couch before rushing out for the waitress.

“He needs a doctor.” Nyssa rushed to her employee. She kneeled beside him and brushed the hair caked with blood from his face. “I’ll need a cloth, something to clean his wounds. Can you talk, Mr. Julien?”

“Who took Cat?” Mag urged, the kid’s fate the only thing on his mind. “Do you remember?”

The driver carefully raised his arm to press the bottom of his palm to his head. He squinted in pain but was able to nod.

“There were four of them.” He stopped for a moment to catch his breath, a deep frown on his swollen brows. “One was someone Cat knew. She bolted out of the limo to meet him as soon as he tapped the window.”

Nyssa flashed Mag a look so haunting it broke his heart.

He placed a comforting hand on her shoulder. “We’ll find her.” He tried his damnedest to sound calm while a brazier of wrath burned inside him.

Evan returned with Sandrine. The waitress gasped at the beaten man and kneeled beside Nyssa before opening the safety kit.

“I’m sorry, miss.” Mr. Julien blanched as Sandrine cleaned his wounds with alcohol pads. “I got out of the car right after her. She called him Oliver, something like that.”

“Shit!” Nyssa bolted straight up before Mag could react. “That fucking little bastard.”

“The boyfriend is back.” Mag planned to make good on the threat he’d given the son of a bitch at the diner. “But why attack Julien?”

“Well.” Mr. Julien flinched with pain as he tried to prop himself up. “It seemed okay at first. I waited outside as Miss Catalina told him she would call him later. That she was coming back to your place at Vlahos Tower.”

“He didn’t like that.” Mag surmised. His upper lip retracted at the thought of tearing the fucker’s throat with his teeth.

“Worse. There was this strange man with him…” The driver took another shallow breath while Sandrine carefully placed a bandage just under his eye. “Unusually tall, weird hair, dressed in all leather. He was hanging in the background with his two cronies at first. But then he stepped forward and told Miss Catalina that it wouldn’t do. That she had to come with them.”

“A man?” Nyssa pressed.

“Yes. This Oliver called him a prince or something.”

“Prince.” Mag’s throat closed in as his mind raced. “No, that couldn’t be…”

“What?” Nyssa’s trepidation was tangible. But Mag couldn’t explain what he was thinking. Not yet. He needed to know more.

Mr. Julien rubbed his forehead again, his face now cleaned but still tumefied. He tried to push himself to his feet but was too weak, and he fell back on the couch with a gasp.
