I grinned, loving the fire in her words and the fierceness in her gaze. My little witch wanted to play with me, and she was about to learn very quickly that I never lost when it came to something I really wanted. Taking her hand again, I moved quickly across the field and I considered the man who was now dead, instead of me. It was a good thing he was misinformed and aimed for my stomach instead of my heart.

Before I taught Adelade a much needed lesson, I first needed to educate the priest hiding out in the church.

If he’d really wanted to kill me, he would’ve done a better job himself, instead of sending some naive parishioner. It made me question his determination to see the deed through.

As soon as we stood outside of the door to the chapel, I turned to Adelade. “Stay here and wait for me. Do not engage with anyone you do not know, or even then. Don’t follow me inside. Do not even watch what is going to happen.”

She rolled her eyes. “It’s just Father Paul. He’s harmless.”

I scowled. “He may be harmless to you, but trust me, darling, the Father is very aware of my world, and he will not hesitate to kill me, or you, if he truly thinks you’ve become dangerous.”

Nervously, her eyebrows furrowed. “Are you going to kill him?”

“That depends on whether or not he tries to stake me in the heart.”

She shook her head. “You can’t kill him, he does so much for this town and he’s a man of God.”

I sighed, my fingers playing with the tips of her hair. “I can’t promise that I won’t.”

She scowled, clutching my fingers to her chest. “Yes you can. You’re more powerful than him and you know it. You can find another way, so promise me, Detrand. Promise me you won’t kill him.”

I stared into her intense gaze, suddenly realizing that she held much more power over me than I’d realized. Sighing, I shook my head. “Fine. I promise not to kill him, even if he attempts to kill me.”

She grinned, then leaned up to kiss me. “Thank you.”

I closed my eyes, my lips melding to hers for a moment. Then she stepped back, and I opened my eyes, stepping away from her to put my hand on the doorknob. “Remember. Stay outside. I don’t want you to get hurt.”

She nodded solemnly. “I will.”

I sighed in relief as she stepped away, then turned away from her and silently opened the door, immediately making myself invisible.

The priest was at the back of the building, kneeling on the floor. He was shaking and reading from his bible out loud. His voice trembled as he read, and he held out his cross towards the door. The cross burned me and I slid to the back wall.

Father Paul was true in his beliefs and, unlike the man he sent to my door, he did have the righteous faith to burn me to dust. I knew I would have to be very careful.
