“It's useless!” Helio says, taking a cushion off the couch and throwing it across the room.

We’re in Theo's study, which has only just been repaired from the fight that Helio and Theo had the other day.

Theo doesn't seem to appreciate the gesture of anything else being thrown around. “Contain yourself, man!” he snaps.

“What's the point in seeing Mira in her dreams if we can't get to her in real life?” Helio asks. “She doesn't know anything… She certainly doesn't know enough for us to save her. Even Gino can't pinpoint where she is, based on the mountain ranges I drew.”

“He’s right,” Elias says, his voice heavy with emotion. “And nothing in our investigations has turned anything up. Cliff's dealings are all too private.”

“I’ve heard his father's the same,” I reply. “They're very secretive, the whole Maxwell clan.”

“Have we thought about him?” Elias asks

Helio scoffs. “What makes you think the father who raised a man like Clifford is going to be any better to deal with than that psychopath.”

“Wait a minute. I think Elias might be onto something,” Theo says. “What does Clifford's father think about sinking a whole lot of money into this personal vendetta… this scheme to get Mira back.”

“Maybe he doesn't know about it,” I say.

“Well, that could be a weakness we could use to our advantage,” Theo continues.

“I see what you're getting at. So, either he does know about it, and he might not be happy with it, or he doesn't know about it… And if we ask questions in the right way, perhaps, through the right channels, we might be able to dig up some information that leads us directly to where Clifford is, which means where Mira is.”

I can feel my pulse rising. I hadn't thought of that, but now it seems so obvious. Frank Maxwell is known for his ruthless business dealings, even more so than Cliff it is. What does Frank really think of Cliff's personal obsession? Does he even know about it?

I think about it carefully, going over my contacts in my mind.

What would be the easiest avenue to get through to Frank?

I’m still pondering this when the phone call comes. It’s Mira’s dad, and he’s clearly worried.

“Why are you calling, Mr Krom?” I ask.

“Cliff has gone missing – that’s the rumor. Tell me, is my daughter all right?”

“No,” I choke out the word as my throat seems to be constricting. “Cliff has taken her. We are doing everything we can to track her down, but…”

“There’s no trace,” Mr Krom says, sounding defeated.

“If there’s anything you can tell us,” I say. “Anything at all that will lead to Mira… We think the Maxwell family might have some information on an old investment property they purchased in the Alps. Could you put us in touch with Frank Maxwell?”

“I can give you all my contacts,” Mira’s father says. “I no longer have a direct line to Frank. Not since our business arrangement soured, but I can give you his lawyer’s number, and anyone else who might be connected.
