CHAPTER THIRTEEN

“I know this doesn’t feel rushed to you, but come on, Abby. This is crazy! How are we supposed to put together a wedding in a week?”

I shrugged and dug through the racks in the small boutique, pushing several dresses to the side. “That Kardashian girl managed to plan her wedding in like ten days or something. If she can do it, so can we.”

Franny scoffed. “Are you serious? She’s a trillionaire. You really think she actually had anything to do with planning that? Not to mention, you are aware that her marriage didn’t last, right?”

I laughed. “But mine will.”

Franny shook her head and walked away, mumbling to herself before she called to one of the saleswomen and asked to have a few dresses pulled down. She was right. We were racing against the clock to get everything done, but it was such a small wedding that I had no doubt we could pull it off. It was going to be at Ma’dear’s house in the backyard, so it wasn’t like we had to search for a venue.

Uncle Marvin was in charge of getting the chairs from the church and putting the seat covers on them, as well as hanging all the Christmas lights from tree to tree. Pastor Bradley would be officiating, while Maureen would grace us with a solo. Harris would stand as Kendrick’s best man, mainly because we had all grown up together, and they had a sort of brotherhood that just kind of blossomed on its own without them ever having to try. They respected one another immensely, and it showed.

Of course, Franny was going to stand beside me, because she was my cousin and there wasn’t anyone else that I could ever imagine being there for me. When I asked Ma’dear to walk me down the aisle, she cried and told me it would be her greatest honor. That was a good twenty minutes of us sobbing together before we could get ourselves together. She had mentioned my mother coming to the wedding, but I diverted the conversation to flower arrangements, and she quickly got the hint that I didn’t want Tracy anywhere near the house on my wedding day, let alone actually involved in the wedding or the planning of it.

“What do you think of this?” Franny held up an ivory colored dress that stopped mid-calf. It had lace across the top and down the skinny sleeves. We had been searching since eight in the morning for just the right dress, and with this being our fourth store, I was starting to see doubles. I was starving and still needed to get to the church for the counseling session that Pastor Bradley had set up for Kendrick and I. He refused to marry us without having a few conversations about what constituted a marriage, and what it meant in the eyes of God. I had about an hour before I would be running late, so I nodded to the dress and followed the saleswoman to the dressing room, needing to pick up the pace a little.
