Chapter 7—The Trailer of Howls

While it wasn’t easy getting through the intense crowds to the patrol cars, it was at least vaguely distracting, as they had to pass an entertainment gauntlet on the way.

On stage three, the local oompah band, which usually specialized in ‘70s and ‘80s heavy metal, was making their way through various mystery and cop TV show theme songs. Currently, it was Hawaii Five-O, which was weirdly sort of made for men and women in lederhosen.

On stage two, students from the local high school were performing a mystery play one of them had written—and were mostly involved in forgetting the lines—but the crowd was supportive, anyway.

Stage one had the local barbershop quartet singing Blue Oyster Cult’s “Don’t Fear the Reaper,” which seemed an odd choice, both for four-part harmony and for a Mystery Weekend, but Di supposed it vaguely got at the idea of murder, if you squinted.

In other words, it was Prospector’s Rest’s usual fare. While he was always certain half of it would drive visitors away, there were apparently a few groups devoted to the sheer weirdness which the locals could create, and they now had thriving fan videos up on Youtube for the world to enjoy. Mayor Velveteen was pushing it for all it was worth, happy to do anything for more visitors and money. Whether it involved geriatric Zumbaers or tuba tributes to Iron Maiden, so long as it got tourists, she was fine with it.

Still, as they raced toward the department vehicles to get where the dogs might be, this was all only noticed in the distant background of Di’s brain, none of it quite strange enough to stand out.

Climbing into a couple of the department’s cruisers, which had the town seal of a snoring prospector with his feet sticking out the end of the covers on it and therefore were not exactly an object of respect, Mac started it up before Di barely had the chance to put the dogs in the back before putting on his seatbelt.

Mariah was driving the other car, Candice and Alex with her.

Although they didn’t use the sirens—not wanting to alert the kidnappers if they were around—Mac was an expert driver. Although she’d flash her lights to get through a congested area if needed, she was quite careful with all the tourists, and soon they were speeding down the mountain road toward the resort at speeds which only made Di hold his breath and cling to the panic bar. While he trusted Mac in everything, he tended to be much more snail-like in his own driving. He’d decided it was his inner little old crafting lady coming out.

Mac, meanwhile, had apparently inherited the soul of Mario Andretti.

Of course, the department’s vehicles rarely got driven and mostly sat around the lot for weeks at a time, but—Mac being Mac—she often spent her less-needed time on duty tinkering with them. At this point, Di would have bet on them over any race car out there.

Very soon, then, they were pulling up quietly to the parking lot outside the resort’s tennis courts.
