Joshua was working with a horse in the pasture when he spotted the van parking by the house. He jogged over, paid Aiden, and then helped Rosemary take the bags into the house while Carolyn carried Sadie Liz in her car seat.

“How was your visit at the hotel?” Joshua asked as he lined the bags up on the counter.

“It was gut.” Carolyn placed the seat on the table. “We saw all of my coworkers and then went to the grocery store. Sadie Liz fell asleep in the van on the way to the store and slept through the shopping trip. I don’t think I’m ever going to get her to sleep tonight. She was passed out, weren’t you?” She leaned over the seat and touched the baby’s cheek.

Rosemary pulled supplies out of the bags and began putting them in the cabinets. “I think your coworkers really enjoyed seeing the boppli. Even your supervisor was smiling while he talked to her. Everyone was so nice.”

“Ya, they were froh that we stopped by.” Carolyn smiled at Rosemary. “Danki for coming with me.”

Joshua wanted to ask her if she’d finally resigned from her job, but he didn’t want to risk upsetting Carolyn, especially in front of Rosemary. The subject of her going back to work was a sore spot for Carolyn, but he longed to hear her say she was going to quit.

Carolyn picked up Sadie Liz. “I’m going to go change her. Do you mind putting everything away, Ro?”

“I don’t mind at all.” Rosemary retrieved a pound of butter from the bag and slipped it into the refrigerator.

“Danki.”

“I’ll come with you,” Josh said. He followed her to the bedroom where she placed Sadie Liz on the changing table Sarah Ann had given her. “I’m glad you had a nice visit.”

“We did have a nice time, but you were right, it was tiring for her.” Carolyn slipped off Sadie Liz’s dress. “It was gut for her to be out in the fresh air, though. And I think I did have a little bit of cabin fever. I enjoyed interacting with other people.”

“Did you talk to your supervisor?” he asked, hoping to gently prod her to talk about her job. His heart would feel settled if he knew he had her at the farm full-time permanently. He didn’t want to share her with the rest of the world when they had a family to raise now.

“I spoke to him briefly.” She kept her gaze on the baby while changing her diaper. “He said it was gut to see me and the boppli.”

“That’s all he said?” Joshua had a difficult time believing the subject of her return to work hadn’t come up between them.

“He asked me to let him know if and when I’m coming back to work.” He waited while she wiped Sadie Liz and applied diaper ointment, and then she went on. “He said he has someone filling in for me, and he’s going to hire her on permanently if I don’t return.”

“And what did you say?” Joshua sank into a chair beside the bed.
