Chapter Twenty-Eight

“You don’t have to stay with me,” Cassie said to Stills when they came to a stop.

“I was thinking the same thing.”

“You were? Wait, why? What are you going to do instead? I mean, this was supposed to be your vacation.”

“I was going to talk to Salvatore,” he admitted, “and do a little research.”

“A little research. Into trackers?”

He rubbed the back of his neck as he admitted, “And I was going to see about the car.”

“What’s wrong with the car?”

“Nothing, it’s just a modern car and can be tracked. So, I was going to see if anyone was using that service who shouldn’t be.”

She glanced around at the snow-covered town, such a quaint, quiet place. They should be celebrating and relaxing, but instead, they were trying to figure out an unseen threat. The dichotomy of it all was difficult to put in place.

“Okay, I appreciate the honesty and I’m freaked out. But it’s more of a theoretical freak-out,” Cassie explained. “And besides, I’ve been here before.”

“You have?”

“Benji, when we weren’t sure what was going on with Jess, and you were parked in front of my apartment for months, I was worried then too, but I lived. So, I figure I’ll live through this.”

“You know, there was one thing that always disappointed me about that assignment.”

“Disappointed you?” Cassie asked with a snort of a laugh, unable to fathom something that would have been disappointing.

“I wish you would have walked past your balcony window in less clothing during those days.”

She rolled her eyes but smiled. “And I wish you’d done your job without a shirt.” She lifted her feet and took large awkward steps so her skis were pointing at the archive. “I’m gonna go get lost in history and shake this crap off. You go find all the answers so we can get back to the romantic part of our trip.”

Cassie watched over her shoulder as he skied away. That alone should be proof enough that he wasn’t worried about any immediate threat.

Having stepped out of her skies, Cassie stomped her boots on the covered porch of the archive before entering. A smiling Elizabeth greeted her with glasses atop her head, hair in a purposeful disarray, and another graphic T-shirt sweater combo.

“Cassie! I just got a call from a friend at the Pueblo archive. I emailed him yesterday about the family of the woman who married James.” Elizabeth pulled a piece of paper and began to read as Cassie took off the boots, changed into her shoes, then hung up her jacket.

“The honorable Mr. and Mrs. Buchanan. He was a judge in Pueblo, Colorado and they had three children; all girls—Maria, Mary and Marna. And each time they were written about in papers it was as Miss Buchanan or M. Buchanan.”

“That’s helpful.” Cassie’s lips pulled into a thin line.

“And the mother was Mina.”

Cassie gave a dry laugh. “Don’t people know that they should have been living their lives for the sole purpose of making things easy for those who would study them a hundred years later?”

“Right?” Elizabeth agreed.
