Darcy left the club and went back to his carriage. He told his driver to take him to Whites. He knew that his cousin would be waiting to hear what had transpired at his meeting with Lord Grenville, but he was not ready to talk about it yet.

As he sat back in the carriage, he thought about what had happened. He had not meant to lie about the child, but he had done it to distract his lordship's attention. If anything went wrong, Lord Grenville would print a story about him having a child rather than Georgiana. He had to do anything to protect her.

Georgiana had been fifteen, and nearly died when she had given birth. But for her age, he would have banished her from Pemberley, but when he had learned of her condition he had felt such guilt that he had sent her away to be cared for until she was well enough to return. She had been very quiet and he had assumed that she was unchanged, but it soon became clear she was very different and in time she had become hard and more argumentative.

He had not been able to protect her from falling under the influence of George Wickham, and that had pained him greatly, but he had vowed to himself that he would do anything to ensure that she was not hurt in such a manner again. She had to be spared the venom of Lord Grenville.
