Chapter Twelve

The hair on the back of Harry’s neck stood on end at the scream. He rushed toward the sound as best he could, cursing his missing leg and leaning heavily on his cane. He rounded the corner of the quiet street, and his gaze caught on a struggle just ahead. It came as no surprise to see Drake involved.

But his blood chilled when he realized who was fighting—Sarah.

She was doing her best to jerk her arm free from the man who held her—the same insolent bounder Harry had confronted at the mail coach stop. Her maid stood crying helplessly nearby as if uncertain what to do.

As Harry neared, Drake, with his back to Harry, grabbed Sarah and covered her mouth, cutting off her scream. Still, she fought. Using elbows, fists, and feet, she battled as if her life depended on it and managed to briefly gain her freedom. She opened her mouth to scream again, but the other man cuffed her on the cheek.

“Tuffin, don’t mark her face,” Drake commanded.

Rage flooded Harry as Sarah stumbled from the blow. Only then did he realize her attacker held a knife. Fear for Sarah sent his heart to his throat.

Drake turned and caught sight of Harry who was only a few feet away. His eyes widened with alarm. “Captain—”

Harry didn’t wait for an explanation. He punched Drake on the jaw and sent him sprawling to the ground. Then Harry shifted to face the man with the blade, gripping his cane tightly. Perhaps for once, the damned thing would be of assistance rather than a nuisance.

Determination hardened Tuffin’s face as he tightened his grip on Sarah and his weapon.

“Drop the knife,” Harry ordered then risked a glance at Sarah, who stared at him as if he were a figment of her imagination. She held a hand over her cheek where she’d been struck, chest heaving from her efforts.

“Mind yer own business.” Tuffin raised the knife before him, drawing Harry’s attention back to him. “We don’t need no interference from the likes of ye.”

“Then you shouldn’t accost defenseless women.” Harry swung his cane up and struck the man’s forearm with as much force as he could muster.

“Damn!” Tuffin jerked from the blow but managed to keep hold of the knife though he released Sarah.

“Run, Sarah,” Harry said as he swept his cane low and hit the side of the man’s knee, causing Tuffin to howl in pain. A movement nearby caught the edge of Harry’s vision, and he knew Drake was recovering.

Harry was outnumbered and felt the odds shifting out of his favor, especially given his missing leg. “Run,” he repeated, unable to believe she hadn’t taken the maid and followed his order.

Instead, she stepped behind Tuffin. While the maid continued to sob, Sarah placed both hands on the man’s back and shoved, knocking him off balance.

Harry took advantage of the distraction by grabbing the man’s knife hand and squeezing hard. He drove his thumb into the underside of Tuffin’s wrist and after a moment of struggle, the knife clattered to the pavement even as Drake gained his feet.
