Chapter 12

“Okay,” Maggie mumbled breathlessly. With her hair all over and her body glistening, she was a glorious mess. “I was impressed. I’d have melted thirty years ago.”

“Again, you’d have been about ten—very creepy,” I mumbled. My heart was still racing.

“You know what I mean. Christ, Kate. I’m dead.” She looked over at me.

I stared at the ceiling. “I was dead before we started.” My voice squeaked out, and Maggie laughed as she cuddled close, pulling the sheet over us.

“God, you were so seductive. Can we play that game again sometime?”

“Sure, preferably when I haven’t played an hour of rugby,” I drawled tiredly.

“That was half the seduction, you dope,” she said, kissing my shoulder.

“Oh. How about I just wear the uniform?”

Maggie thought about it. “Okay. Works for me.”

“God, I am exhausted. Smitty was all over the place. I don’t remember her being so into the reunion atmosphere,” I said with a wild yawn. “Do me a favor?”

“Rub your head?”

I laughed. “You know me too well.”

“I’m beginning to. Come here, fly-half.” Maggie lifted up on the pillow.

I eagerly, if not stiffly, rolled over and placed my head on Maggie’s chest. I nestled in and sighed happily.

“It’s amazing,” Maggie said. “You can solve murders and act like a ten-year-old at the same time.”

“It’s an art,” I mumbled as Maggie gently ran her fingers through my hair. “You’ve done this so many times, I wonder if you can get the gray out this way.”

I heard Maggie chuckle, but she said nothing. I was in heaven as Maggie’s gentle touch soothed me. I felt her fingers trace the scar on my neck. She still said nothing, but in that touch, I could almost hear her kind, soft voice telling me she was there, always—just in that one touch.

“Barbie looked sad,” I mumbled.

“I know. She was in a deep conversation with Smitty. Maybe we shouldn’t have left them.”

I slowly raised my head and opened one sleepy eye. “As if we could stop ourselves.” I yawned, and Maggie actually blushed.

“True.”

“Sweetie, I’m sorry. I’m fading.”

“Take a nap, Katie. You deserve it. You played well today. I’m proud of you and very surprised.” She caressed my shoulders.

“Want to know the truth?” I asked in a sleepy voice.

“Always.” She kissed my stupid head.

“I was showing off for you today, and I prayed to every saint I could think of that I didn’t look like a complete jackass out there.”

“In front of your teammates?”

“I couldn’t care less what anyone else thinks. It was you. I just don’t ever want to disappoint you.”

“You will never disappoint me.” She kissed the top of my head.

Maggie continued to run her fingers through my hair. “I’m—” I stopped short, not knowing how to continue.

“Yes?” Maggie whispered, and I heard the smile in her voice.

I hated my vulnerability, but I needed to know. “I’m afraid if…” God, now what? You opened your big mouth again, Ryan.

Maggie said nothing and never stopped her soothing touch.

“I’m afraid if I let myself go, I’ll be lost in you and someday you’ll leave,” I whispered against her breast.
