Dressed in one of her finer black gowns, Adelaide sat on the front bench of the buckboard and admired the passing countryside as Mrs. Huntley drove them into town. Adelaideâs hair was piled high on top of her head with two curls running down the length of her back, with a straw hat pinned to her hair.
âIâm excited to go to church. Iâve never been before,â Pauline said from the back of the wagon.
âYou have never been to church before?â asked Nash, who was sitting next to Pauline.
âIâm afraid I was always much too busy with my duties to attend,â Pauline admitted.
âHenry always gave us Sunday morning off to attend church, if we so desired,â Nash revealed, âand Broderick has continued that tradition.â
Roger spoke up from next to Nash. âSadly, even with having the morning off, most of the cowboys prefer to stay at the ranch.â
âThatâs a shame,â Pauline said.
âBroderick wakes up early every Sunday to complete the early morning chores by himself,â Nash revealed.
âThatâs admirable of him,â Adelaide acknowledged. âI must admit that it was nice sleeping in and not having to milk Bessie or collect the eggs this morning.â
âI imagine that it was,â Nash replied. âBroderick has always been a hard worker.â
Mrs. Huntley glanced over at her. âWould you care to drive?â
âTruly?â Adelaide asked.
With a smile, Mrs. Huntley extended the reins towards her. âEvery woman worth her salt in the West needs to know how to drive a buckboard.â
Adelaide accepted the reins and adjusted them in her gloved hands. âThis is the first time Iâve ever driven a wagon.â
âI imagine you employed people to drive you around,â Nash commented as he leaned closer to her.
âWe did,â Adelaide confessed. âMy father thought it was beneath us to drive our own carriage.â
âWhat a fairy tale life you must have lived,â he teased.
âIt was a charmed life, to be sure,â Adelaide replied as she gripped the reins with both hands. âAm I doing this right?â
Mrs. Huntley gave her an encouraging nod. âYou are doing just fine, dearie.â
âItâs nearly impossible to mess up driving a buckboard, Miss Adelaide,â Roger added in an amused tone. âJust keep leading the horse straight on into town.â
As they passed through the center of town, Adelaide couldnât believe that she was driving the buckboard. She was continually amazed at all the liberties afforded to women in the West.
A few rough-looking men tipped their hats at her as they stood outside the saloon, but she gave them no heed.
Mrs. Huntley pointed towards a small building on the outskirts of town, where a steady line of people made their way inside.
âThatâs the church. Just keep going down this road.â
Once they arrived at the church, Adelaide pulled back on the reins to stop the horse, and Mrs. Huntley set the brake. Before she even put the reins down, Nash was holding his hand out to assist her out of the wagon.
âAllow me to help you down, Miss Adelaide.â
âThank you, Nash,â she replied, accepting his proffered hand.
