*****

I woke up the following day and prepared for my in-person consultation with a bride-to-be who requested an emergency slot on my calendar. Usually, I wouldn’t take orders at the last minute, but I needed to get the word out about my business, and for a wedding size of over a hundred people, that could put me in the black for my first year in business.

I was on my way to grab my purse and head out of the door when I looked down to see the reminder to pay the electric bill pop up on my iPhone screen. I’d forgotten to pay it so many times before; if I didn’t set a reminder, I would always be sitting in the dark. I dug inside my purse and cracked open my wallet to make sure I had my bank card to pay it online when I got down to the shop. After finding my card, I realized the single fifty-dollar bill in my wallet was gone.

“What the fuck?” I mumbled, curving my neck in the direction of my guestroom. I trekked straight down the hallway and into the room without bothering to knock. “What happened to the fifty dollars I had in my purse?” I confronted Junie.

He groaned sleepily. “I don’t know nothin’ ‘bout no fifty dollars.”

Irritated and feigning for my coffee, I yawned. “It’s too early for your fucking circus. That’s bullshit, and you know it.”

“I said I don’t know. Why you asking me?”

“Because you’re the only other person here, dummy!”

“How you know you ain’t spend it?”

“You askin’ a lot of fuckin’ questions about my money. Now run it back right now,” I demanded, sticking out my hand.

He sighed and got up to trek over to his pants in a pile of yesterday’s clothes at the foot of the bed. He fished around inside his pocket and pulled out my crisp fifty-dollar bill and shoved it in my direction. “Fine, here.”

I snatched it from him. “Why the fuck were you goin’ in my purse, huh? If I can’t fuckin’ trust you, then you can’t fuckin’ stay here!”

“I’m sorry, aight? I needed some extra cash to float me until I can get some real money.”

“So, your thought process was to steal from the person that offered you a job less than twenty-four hours ago? You’re a fuckin’ class act, Junie.”

“I’m sorry, Gia. You’re right. I fucked up, again.”

I wanted so bad to light into his ass about his impulsiveness and all the trouble it had gotten him in over the years, but he’d heard that sermon from me more times than we both wanted to count. It was starting to be more clearly why my parents severed ties with him. All he did was lie for no damn reason at all. A sigh hissed past my lips as I glanced down at the thirty-minute Cake Consultation with Draya Wallace reminder on my screen.

“We’ll finish this when I get back.”
