Line Of Gossip

“You’re here early,” his mother said to him when he was picking Willow up. “I thought you’d be later.”

“I finished earlier,” he said. It was still six and Zara had plans, so his mother picked up Willow at four today for him.

“Willow just started to watch her movie thinking you’d be later. You know how she gets,” his father said, walking into the kitchen to join the conversation.

“Yeah. Well, I don’t want to come back in two hours for her since I’m here.”

“The anniversary of Holly Bloom’s death is today,” his mother said quietly.

“What?” he asked. “What does that have to do with anything?”

“Liz,” his father said. “Stay out of it.”

“No. We know he is seeing Lily. Willow talks about her all the time. I refuse to believe it’s only what you kids call friends with benefits.”

He wasn’t sure if he was more embarrassed over his mother calling him a kid or that she was classifying what he and Lily had. Hell, he wasn’t sure what they had. Just that one night of fabulous sex that knocked his world on its axis almost two weeks ago.

What he thought they’d have going in turned out to be nothing like he imagined.

Just that one time they’d been together, but then Willow made him call her the next day.

Since then though, it’d only been texts or phone calls about work more than anything.

“What I do in my time is my business,” he said.

“It is,” his father said. “But in this town, it’s a lot of people’s business.”

He frowned. “What is being said?”

His mother glanced back toward the living room, but it seemed Willow was staying put. “That in the past week I’ve been stopped by two different people and asked about you and Lily. They’ve seen you out to eat and that you are at the shop working.”

“A job,” he said. “I’ve had a job to do and now I’ve got an entire list of projects for all their properties. Why do people care?”

“People are always going to care about things that don’t concern them,” his father said.

He knew that. He’d been shocked to find out that Lily’s marriage was a sham. She didn’t say as much as he would have liked, but he realized she didn’t owe him anything. Not even why she was a virgin, but he was glad she told him as much as she had.

“They should stick their noses back in their own business,” he said. “Willow doesn’t need to hear this crap.”

“No one is going to say anything in front of her,” his mother said.

“Really? Did Zara tell you that Willow overheard how her mother didn’t love her or want her and that is why she’s not around?”

His mother scowled. “Yes, and Zara took care of it. Again, people say shit all the time. But your business is growing. You’re in demand. You’re doing a lot of work for a self-made millionaire in the area who has always been in the line of gossip. It’s just spreading.
