Line Of Gossip
âYouâre here early,â his mother said to him when he was picking Willow up. âI thought youâd be later.â
âI finished earlier,â he said. It was still six and Zara had plans, so his mother picked up Willow at four today for him.
âWillow just started to watch her movie thinking youâd be later. You know how she gets,â his father said, walking into the kitchen to join the conversation.
âYeah. Well, I donât want to come back in two hours for her since Iâm here.â
âThe anniversary of Holly Bloomâs death is today,â his mother said quietly.
âWhat?â he asked. âWhat does that have to do with anything?â
âLiz,â his father said. âStay out of it.â
âNo. We know he is seeing Lily. Willow talks about her all the time. I refuse to believe itâs only what you kids call friends with benefits.â
He wasnât sure if he was more embarrassed over his mother calling him a kid or that she was classifying what he and Lily had. Hell, he wasnât sure what they had. Just that one night of fabulous sex that knocked his world on its axis almost two weeks ago.
What he thought theyâd have going in turned out to be nothing like he imagined.
Just that one time theyâd been together, but then Willow made him call her the next day.
Since then though, itâd only been texts or phone calls about work more than anything.
âWhat I do in my time is my business,â he said.
âIt is,â his father said. âBut in this town, itâs a lot of peopleâs business.â
He frowned. âWhat is being said?â
His mother glanced back toward the living room, but it seemed Willow was staying put. âThat in the past week Iâve been stopped by two different people and asked about you and Lily. Theyâve seen you out to eat and that you are at the shop working.â
âA job,â he said. âIâve had a job to do and now Iâve got an entire list of projects for all their properties. Why do people care?â
âPeople are always going to care about things that donât concern them,â his father said.
He knew that. Heâd been shocked to find out that Lilyâs marriage was a sham. She didnât say as much as he would have liked, but he realized she didnât owe him anything. Not even why she was a virgin, but he was glad she told him as much as she had.
âThey should stick their noses back in their own business,â he said. âWillow doesnât need to hear this crap.â
âNo one is going to say anything in front of her,â his mother said.
âReally? Did Zara tell you that Willow overheard how her mother didnât love her or want her and that is why sheâs not around?â
His mother scowled. âYes, and Zara took care of it. Again, people say shit all the time. But your business is growing. Youâre in demand. Youâre doing a lot of work for a self-made millionaire in the area who has always been in the line of gossip. Itâs just spreading.
