Chapter Sixteen

Jane woke in the loft, playing the same events in her mind that had disturbed her sleep every single day since she snuck out of the cottage with Asher. The kiss they shared in the moonlight. Granted, she knew many injured men in strange places would become grateful to their caregiver and would do such things. The kiss was nothing more than his expression of gratitude—but her heart wanted it to be so much more.

Guilford, her deceased husband, had been sloppy with his kissing. In truth, he was sloppy even in the one time he bedded her. What did she expect? The match was not made in heaven, but by their two fathers. Hatched from the desires of power and greed. Guilford and she were nothing more than pawns in a very deadly game. Often in her youth she fancied herself married to King Edward. They had so much more in common—their love for books and the reformed religion. Oh, how she missed the talks they would have. At one time, even her own parents thought it would be a wise match, but he was betrothed to another. And then he died. Little did she know his death would be the end for her too.

Jane sighed and sat up, watching Hildegard’s chest rise and fall with each easy breath. The events of last eve puzzled her even more than the kiss. Hildegard wanted Asher gone and planned to tell him so that eve. Instead, later, Otto Werner had shown up and the pair left for some time. Perchance both had finally taken the first step in courtship. Yet when Hildegard returned, she was in a foul mood. Her words were terse, and she greeted Asher, who had been resting on his pallet, by closing the curtain, shutting him off from the rest of the room.

There was no talk of him leaving as they ate their evening meal. Suddenly Hildegard announced that it would be a good idea for Asher to make a bed for himself in the shed on the morrow. He readily agreed, and that was the end of the discussion. Jane would have her own bed again. The idea was grand, but even in spring, how would Asher fare in the cold shed?

Jane quickly dressed and slipped down the loft ladder. She tiptoed past the closed curtain and quietly added wood to the hearth, stoking the fire with the poker. The flames crackled and glowed to life. Warmth covered the room, chasing away the morning chill. She paused when she heard a stirring behind the curtain. With a groan, Asher’s feet hit the floor. His bare toes peeked out of the bottom of the curtain. They were long and lean, but not overly callused. Another giveaway that he was not a man who worked long hours in the fields.

She smiled at the thought, but then her spirit filled with doubt. He arrived in Hanenburg by foot. He had no horse, and if he did, surely someone would have told her.
